As the demand for green mobility continues to grow, ABB is on track to become the first company to receive the CharIN Combined Charging System (CCS) Foundation Certificate, which improves interoperability and significantly enhances the experience for users of its DC charging stations.
With total electric vehicle (EV) sales expected to grow from 2.5 million units in 2020 to 31.1 million units in 20301, investing in charging infrastructure and driving common standards and interoperability will be key to meeting this growing demand.
In response, ABB is leading the CharIN working group with DEKRA to establish independent CCS testing, becoming the first DC charger to receive CCS Foundation Conformance certification. This will guarantee interoperability and safe operation between the charger and any brand of electric vehicle.

This certification is a strong indication that we are doing just that; Our chargers are flying the flag for a universal standard so that more people are moving to the future of electric vehicles. ”
DC charging station manufacturers can apply for the CharIN CCS Basic certificate, which will be issued after successful testing by CharIN's accredited test laboratory. DEKRA was one of the first two test institutes to be officially designated as a recognized test laboratory by CharIN, demonstrating their expertise in the field of test execution and result analysis.
ABB's DC charging solutions using CCS1 and CCS2 are currently being certified by DEKRA. Certification assures customers that ABB chargers are fully compliant with the latest CCS standards, so they can work safely and reliably with any compatible CCS-certified vehicle.
CharIN is a global association with 200 members dedicated to promoting combined charging system (CCS)-based interoperability to charge all types of electric vehicles worldwide. ABB joined CharIN in 2015, the year the CharIN Association was founded. ABB is a member of the CharIN Steering Committee and is actively involved in the development and implementation of CCS as a standard. ABB is leading the CharIN working group dedicated to CCS interoperability testing and certification.
