On World Electric Vehicle Day, the latest episode of ABB Decoded discusses the importance of fleet electrification, with a focus on heavy-duty vehicles
Explore the challenges of charging these vehicles and how ABB is helping to drive infrastructure advancements to address them
As part of the EV100, ABB has committed to electrifying more than 10,000 of its vehicles by 2030
Today is the second annual World Electric Vehicle Day, in which ABB is a key partner. This global event celebrates electric vehicles while also encouraging the transition to sustainable transportation. With CO2 levels at an all-time high and continuing to rise, reducing emissions is critical, and the transition to electric mobility is a key pathway to achieve this. Stephanie Medeiros is an E-mobility Global Account Manager and Electrical Engineer by training, working on fleet electrification projects around the world. In this podcast episode, she shares her knowledge and insights on the challenges and solutions to create this important element of a low-carbon society.
The importance of fleet electrification
Given that 25% of emissions come from transportation, fleet electrification is important, and fleets are an important part of that. As Stephanie explains, it's also important to look at heavy vehicles in a fleet:
"Although heavy vehicles make up about 1% of the fleet and vehicles, they actually account for more than 25% of global road transport emissions. So, if we were to replace a conventional internal combustion engine truck, we would save about 22 tons of CO2 or 500 liters of diesel per year. So they're a big number, and if we add all of that together, we're going to reduce a lot of emissions on a global scale. ”
"When we think about fleet electrification, there are already a lot of great projects going on around the world. For example, Amazon plans to operate 100,000 electric delivery vans for the last mile in the United States and around the world, which will be realized within the next 10 years. ”
Advance charging infrastructure
For charging infrastructure for heavy-duty vehicles, higher charging power is required due to larger batteries and smaller charging windows. This is an important consideration when fleet operators are using electric vehicles, as installation and operating costs will be very high, and they don't want all vehicles to enter and be charged at the same time. However, there are ways to address these challenges.
The latest episode of ABB Decoded discusses the importance of fleet electrification.
"So, the first thing is smart charging, spreading the charge across the entire available window and maximizing your assets as much as possible. There are software solutions and tools available to facilitate this and ensure that your vehicle is charged when it is needed. Then, there are other solutions, such as battery storage and solar and renewable energy integration, to help meet peak demand.
"In terms of charging, you can charge a 25 or 50 kilowatt heavy truck all the time. We have the CCS (Combined Charging System) standard to charge these vehicles up to 350 kW depending on the current intensity. What's really interesting is that the industry is coming together to focus on megawatt charging – 1 megawatt or more. As a result, this will become the new standard, and ABB is part of that effort. ”
ABB's fleet electrification project
ABB is not only helping customers around the world transition to e-mobility, but also making changes itself to align with its 2030 sustainability strategy and help achieve a low-carbon society.
"As part of EV100, ABB has committed to electrifying more than 10,000 of its vehicles by 2030. In addition, ABB is already working on projects around the world, such as in Sweden, where ABB has begun to convert around 700 of its company cars to electric vehicles. In the United Kingdom, ABB announced that it will convert its fleet of 500 company cars to electric vehicles by 2025.
"If we are looking at great examples of the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles, ABB also has a pilot project for electric trucks running in Switzerland. From this, we learned that it is very possible to have an electric car that charges seamlessly and has little impact on operation. We also got great feedback from the drivers who said that driving was fun, responsive, and the fact that it was less noisy really helped to reduce stress and make things a lot calmer around the driver. ”
