The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to ABB's largest market
Electric race cars around the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal are the perfect place to showcase sustainable transportation on land and sea
The latest video from ABB's FIA Girls on Track series
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to the Red Hook neighborhood of New York City for the fifth time this weekend.
With the iconic Manhattan skyline in the background, the Red Hook Raceway circles the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal under the gaze of Lady Liberty. The 14-turn, 2.32-kilometre track combines high-speed corners, straights and hairpin turns to create an exciting and challenging street circuit for the 22 riders.
Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer at ABB, said: "We are thrilled to be back in New York City to once again showcase the future of sustainable mobility and the capabilities of electric vehicles in ABB's largest market. Since 2010, we've invested more than $14 billion in this market for plant expansions, greenfield developments, and acquisitions to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and electrification – ultimately helping to drive progress toward a more sustainable future. ”
ABB will play a key role in achieving this goal as the United States begins to implement its largest EV charging investment, installing 500,000 EV chargers across the country. Currently, ABB powers more than 1,000 charging stations in the United States, and the company is continuing to invest in electric vehicles. ABB added 125 jobs to its electric vehicle business in the United States this year. In Sugarland, Texas, ABB is opening a training center to provide hands-on training for authorized service partners in repairing and maintaining EV chargers. At the same time, ABB opened a product development and research facility in Southern California to design, develop and test EV chargers for the United States.
In addition, this year ABB acquired a controlling stake in InCharge Energy, a commercial charging infrastructure solutions company for electric vehicles, expanding ABB's portfolio of smart and connected electric vehicles. ABB has also invested in ChargeLab, a software provider for EV charging, and signed a partnership agreement to develop next-generation software solutions for ABB charging stations. These investments strengthen ABB's position in the United States market and further support its vertically integrated offerings, including charging hardware, digital services, and advanced energy and fleet management systems.
This development of electric vehicles extends far beyond the road: ABB is also decarbonizing the marine industry by increasing the number of electric ferries and increasing the electrification capacity on shore. One such example is the sustainable technology solution installed on two new passenger ships USS Maid of the Mist in Niagara Falls, upstate New York. They are the first all-electric ships ever built in the United States and benefit from ABB's zero-emission technology. They are fully powered by a high-capacity battery pack, allowing visitors to experience the waterfall without the engine noise, vibration, or exhaust fumes of traditional diesel engines.
ABB's commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainability also extends to the energy used. The company has been awarded two major contracts from Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ:PLUG) to supply electrical systems for two new hydrogen plants in North America, including the largest hydrogen plant in mainland New York. The plants will jointly produce 60 tonnes of green hydrogen per day to replace around 170 tonnes of fossil fuels in the logistics and transport sector. Green hydrogen is produced from renewable energy sources and has zero carbon emissions when used as a fuel. ABB solutions will help make its production more affordable, accessible and sustainable.
Prior to E-Prix in New York City, ABB released a new video in its series as part of the company's partnership with FIA Girls on Track. Featuring Cristina Mañas Fernández, Performance and Lead Data Science Engineer at Jaguar TCS Racing, the video explores what attracts her to motorsports, her role in the team, and the importance of providing equal opportunities for young children regardless of gender.
On Thursday, ABB will also release the latest video from its "Promoters" series. Featuring Daniela Lužanin, Head of Partnerships at ABB, and Hannah Brown, Chief of Staff · Formula E, the video explores the impact and benefits of the FIA Girls on Track program and why both Formula E and ABB are keen to support it.
Following New York City, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will return to London for rounds 13 and 14 on July 30-31.
