ABB's energy management solutions support Asia's largest wastewater treatment plant

ABB has successfully delivered a low- and medium-voltage digital solution for the expansion of the Bailonggang Wastewater Treatment Plant in Shanghai, China, to ensure a continuous and reliable power supply.

The expansion of the facility also included the introduction of a more advanced wastewater treatment process, which required ABB's high-reliability and sophisticated power management solutions to improve efficiency and reliability. As part of the project, ABB also developed a customized power management concept to ensure continuous operation and prevent downtime during facility upgrades.

Shanghai Bailonggang Wastewater Treatment Plant is the largest wastewater treatment plant in Asia and one of the largest in the world. With a daily capacity of 2.8 million cubic meters, the facility treats about one-third of the city's wastewater in the Shanghai metropolitan area and serves more than 7 million residents.

The upgrade of the facility will improve the quality of drainage in the Yangtze River and will further support the government's strategy to minimize chemical oxygen demand in Shanghai, a key factor in improving air quality and achieving local sustainability goals.

ABB's low- and medium-voltage solutions ensure continuous, precise and resilient power for processes such as advanced phosphorus removal, as well as chlorination and UV disinfection of effluent to ensure water quality and reduce contaminants.

The company's smart medium-voltage power distribution solution enables remote monitoring of power consumption and early identification of any safety risks, enabling plant managers to make informed decisions earlier to maximize productivity and minimize plant disruptions.
