In the third episode of the ABB Decoding Podcast, launched ahead of the start of ABB's Formula E Season 7, Nissan e.dams driver Sébastien Buemi commented on his experience in Formula E and how the sport is driving progressive skills in sustainability and electric cars.
Participation in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship
Buemi competed in Formula E in his debut season in 2014 thinking it would be a good time but didn't know how it would develop.
"Soon, I realized that it was going to be a big deal and that it was going to grow. We are seeing manufacturers participating in the tournament at a higher and higher level, with big sponsors and partners, including ABB. Today, politically speaking, it is very important to go electrified. I'm also happy because I've seen improvements in the sedan. Initially, we had two cars, but now we finish the race with more power, faster and with just one car. ”
The importance of power
"One of the features of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is that a lot of the features come from power and energy management. The idea is to use Formula E as a conduit to develop new skills and software that will one day be used in road cars. We've done a lot of work to improve power and find the right compromise between energy savings and speed. The motors are getting better and better, and the power is getting closer to 98%, which is great, and the way we use energy is getting better and better. ”
Promote electric sedans and wait for Gen3
"I feel like if motorsport had proper information like Formula E, people would be better able to embrace it today. We're working to develop a channel to convince people that electric cars are the future. We showed how far batteries have evolved, cars are getting faster and faster, and I think we're changing the public's perception of electric cars. I thought the improvement from Gen1 to Gen2 was mostly scope. But from Gen2 to Gen3, I expect there will be a lot of progress in terms of modest features. ”
The launch of Gen3 in Season 9 will also make ABB the official charging provider, offering a portable charging unit that can charge two cars together, and then reduce the footprint of the charger.
The shift to all-electric motorsport
"I think electrification will become more and more important in the future with the advent of more hybrid and electric cars. However, it is difficult to say whether Formula E will replace or surpass Formula One. Now, Formula 1 is still the number one category in motorsport, but Formula E is increasing dramatically and I thought it deserved a place on the historical ladder of motorsport. ”
ABB is the title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, a world racing series of all-electric single-seaters. Its skills support events on city street circuits around the world. ABB entered the electric car market in 2010 and has now sold more than 400,000 electric car chargers in more than 85 markets; More than 20,000 DC fast chargers and 380,000 communication chargers, including those sold through Chargedot.
