ABB Power Grid's HVDC transformers and HV capabilities are an important part of China's large-scale renewable power integration

ABB's Grid Affairs has won a number of prime orders for the supply of advanced HVDC converter transformers and high-voltage equipment for three 800 kilovolt (kV) ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission lines owned by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) in the country. These links will help integrate hydro, wind and solar power generation to reduce CO2 emissions together. Financial details were not disclosed

The world's strongest transmission link

The transmission link will be the strongest in the world. Each link will transport up to 8,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity – enough alone to meet the needs of about 8 million people in our country (1).

The 1,700-kilometer-long Asia-China-Nanchang line is part of China's West-to-East Power Transmission Program. It helps Sichuan Province, which is rich in hydropower resources in southwest China, to transport green power to load centers in Jiangxi Province in eastern China. After the completion of the project, it is estimated that coal consumption will be reduced by about 16 million tons and CO2 emissions by about 40 million tons per year.

The 1,100-kilometre Shaanxi-Wuhan connection marks an important step forward for the State Grid Corporation of China in developing a global standard for UHVDC systems. The 1,500-kilometer-long Qinghai-Henan project is an ultra-high voltage corridor dedicated to transporting clean power such as solar and wind energy.

As part of the solution, ABB Power Grid will provide the critical skills to ensure and secure reliable, efficient and smooth transmission and distribution of power over these long-distance links, and then minimize losses and optimize power quality. Key skills include components such as HVDC converter transformers, bulkheads, capacitor banks, dead-box circuit breakers, and HVDC switches.

ABB Power Grids – a precursor to ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) skills

ABB's Grid Affairs is a key skills supplier to State Grid's first UHVDC transmission line. The 6,400 MW, 2,000-kilometer-long Xiangjiaba-Shanghai Link supplies hydropower from southwest China to wealthy Shanghai. Since then, ABB Power Grid has continued to break the boundaries of long-distance transmission technology, cooperated with the State Grid Corporation of China in a number of key projects, and made contributions to China's power security, economic support and social development.

UHVDC skills are key to interconnecting regional, national, and continental power grids to efficiently deliver clean power in large quantities over long distances. UHVDC uses direct current (DC) power at very high voltages and has 40% lower losses than equivalent conventional AC (communication) systems. This means that much less power is wasted, more power is available to the end user, and overall carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are cut.

Once operational, the Qinghai-Henan project is estimated to save around 30 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year – equivalent to more than 6 million buses on the road(2).

SGCC is the world's largest utility company, with 1.1 billion customers and more than 1 million kilometers of transmission lines. The State Grid Corporation of China is committed to optimizing the resources available in the country, and has reduced CO2 emissions by 820 million tons through the use of ultra-high voltage transmission. These effects are an important part of the power strategy of the Chinese government, which aims to promote the construction of power grids at all levels and improve the ability and efficiency of the optimal allocation of resources.
