ABB E-mobility today opened the company's largest DC fast charger production site, the E-mobility Center of Excellence, in Valdarno, Tuscany, reinforcing its position as a global leader in EV charging solutions.
The full ABB DC charging solution will be produced on-site, supporting the electrification of all transportation sectors and demonstrating ABB's commitment to providing smart, reliable charging solutions for electric vehicles for a zero-emission future.
ABB E-mobility has already sold more than 680,000 EV chargers in more than 85 markets, and the $30 million investment in the new Valdarno plant means it now has more than doubled its production capacity in the last two years, with the new 16,000 m2 Valdarno plant capable of producing more than 10,000 additional DC chargers per year.

The new state-of-the-art manufacturing site sets a new benchmark for the industry, with its seven production lines that produce a DC fast charger every 20 minutes. The 15 test facilities are capable of simulating more than 400 charges per day, while the integrated automation solution connects the shop floor to the innovative AS/RS, ensuring optimized inventory control, full traceability, and efficient operations, supported by AGVs and handling vehicles.

In addition, the new facility will support the continued innovation of ABB E-mobility. The Valdarno plant, which invested 14% of its 2021 revenue in R&D, will have 3,200m2 of development and prototyping space. Here, approximately 70 of the site's more than 500 employees will work on the implementation of innovative solutions, new software, and product lifecycle management tools to fully integrate R&D activities with manufacturing. ABB E-mobility has more than 350 R&D experts worldwide and more than 350 granted patents.
The Valdarno facility also aims to achieve Gold LEED certification – a globally recognized independent standard for the design, construction, and operation of environmentally friendly buildings. Rainwater is collected for irrigation, 100% of production waste is recycled, and all energy needs are met by certified renewable energy sources – including a PV system that provides 720MWh of electricity per year and prevents 338 tonnes of CO2.
The site's power distribution has also been optimized thanks to ABB Ability Energy and Asset Manager, which monitors and effectively manages more than 9,000 devices across the facility, including thermal conditioning, lighting and air handling units, resulting in potential energy savings of 60%. Through its 2030 Sustainability Strategy, ABB is committed to achieving a low-carbon society by supporting customers to reduce their CO2 emissions while achieving carbon neutrality in its own operations.
