ABB introduces compact, high-power chargers for urban needs

An extension of the best-selling Terra series, the new 180kW Terra 184 is the highest-density compact high-power charger on the market

According to the United Nations, cities account for more than 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions1 and are expected to live in more than two-thirds of the world's population by 20502.

Therefore, it is crucial for these rapidly expanding urban centers to take proactive steps to reduce carbon emissions, and electric vehicles are a key factor in achieving this goal. But if electric vehicles are to be viable in high-density cities where space is of the essence, solutions must be developed to address these challenges.

That's exactly what ABB's latest developments in charging technology are. The latest addition to ABB's best-selling Terra range of chargers, the Terra 184 charger is fast, compact and consolidated to charge up to three vehicles at the same time3, maximizing revenue for drivers and charging operators.

With 180kW of charging power, the Terra 184 can be used in vehicles of all sizes, whether it is the latest or next generation of private cars, buses or vans. But unlike other high-power chargers, it has a footprint of less than 0.5 square meters, the same as the Terra 54 type at the time. In fact, its innovative planning means that there is no need for a separate power cabinet, providing the perfect fast and compact solution for cities with limited space.

The Terra 184 supports all charging standards in the mall, including CCS, CHAdeMO and AC, and meets all the needs of batteries up to 920V. It has highly customizable features, including a custom credit card payment terminal, screen, and cable, which are also planned to be 8 meters long to provide the maximum charging box.

To add flexibility, operators of other Terra types, such as the Terra 94 or 124, will have the option to upgrade their charging solution to the Terra 184 in the future by adding additional power modules.

Terra 184 will be purchased directly from ABB and will be available from selected ABB dealers in Europe, starting in August, in North America and in the rest of the world in the fourth quarter of the year. It provides a safe, smart and sustainable charging solution that supports ABB's "mission to zero emissions" for electrification, the de facto vision of zero emissions for everyone.
