ABB is appointed by Chevron Australia and Aker Solutions to supply power to the Jansz-Io field from both onshore and subsea.
ABB won an order worth approximately $120 million to supply the entire power system (EPS) for the multibillion-dollar Jansz-Io compression (J-IC) project. The order, which includes contracts with Chevron Australia Pty Ltd and Aker Solutions, was booked in Q3 2021.
The Jansz-Io field is located about 200 kilometres offshore off the northwest coast of Australia at a depth of about 1,400 metres. The field is part of Chevron's operated Gorgon gas project, one of the world's largest natural gas development projects. The J-IC project, which transports gas from the deep sea to shore, marks the third global deployment of the world's leading subsea compression technology and the first time outside of Norway1, where ABB is also responsible for providing EPS. The project will involve the construction and installation of a 27,000-tonne (upper and hull) typically unattended floating site control station (FCS), approximately 6,500-tonne subsea compression infrastructure and a 135-kilometre subsea power cable connecting Barrow Island.
Jansz-io Compression uses world-leading subsea compression technology to sustain a long-term gas supply to Gorgon. The Chevron-operated Gorgon project is a joint venture between Australia subsidiaries of Chevron (47.333%), ExxonMobil (25%), Shell (25%), Osaka Gas (1.25%), Tokyo Gas (1%) and JERA (0.417%).
"The Jansz-io Compression project is a major enabler for maintaining a critical source of natural gas for our customers in the Asia-Pacific region. It will support the energy transition in the region, where many countries rely heavily on coal for power generation," said Peter Terwiesch, President of ABB Process Automation. "Compared to coal, burning natural gas produces about half as much carbon dioxide per unit of energy. We are proud to lead the global energy industry with pioneering and innovative subsea power technologies that bring us closer to a carbon-neutral future. The project reflects our close collaboration and trusted subsea history with Chevron and Aker Solutions. ”
"This is a very important project for us as it supports our commitment to low-carbon oil and gas production and the development of renewable solutions to meet future energy needs. We are excited to partner with ABB again to take subsea solutions to the next level and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy production," added Maria Peralta, Executive Vice President, Subsea at Aker Solutions.
ABB will supply most of the electrical equipment for J-IC, both offshore and subsea. For the first time, the project will combine two of ABB's core technologies – shore power and variable speed drive (VSD) long-distance subsea power. This electrical system will be able to transmit 100 megavoltamperes of current at a distance of approximately 140 kilometers and at a depth of 1,400 meters.
The contract was awarded following concept development and front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies. Work will begin immediately, and the subsea compression system is expected to be operational by 2025.
