ABB robots increase automation in the solar industry

Producing a solar collector every six minutes, ABB robots make Absolicon's solar technology a cost-competitive alternative to traditional heating.

In order to enable the transition to a sustainable society and conserve resources, the production of solar collector panels must be precise, efficient, and cost-effective. To achieve this, Absolicon and ABB have developed the world's only complete solution for the large-scale production of centralized solar collectors at Absolicon's plant in Härnösand, Sweden.

The degree of automation greatly increases the output. Absolicon's robotic production line now uses two ABB robots to produce a solar collector panel every six minutes, compared to a maximum of three units per day with the previous manual production method.

"Developing automated production processes has enabled our global business case to radically reduce the price of solar collectors, while always manufacturing them with very high quality. For the first time, the productivity provided by ABB robots means that we can make solar energy compete in price with conventional industrial heating," said Joakim Byström, CEO of Absolicon. "Our new automated production line can produce a complete solar collector every six minutes, so while competitors rely on labor-intensive manufacturing processes, we can now do it with five people, two robots, and a small set of components."

For 20 years, Absolicon has been developing sustainable solar technologies and producing the most efficient parabolic solar collectors in its class, generating up to 160 degrees of heat and steam for industrial companies and district heating networks.

The next phase of the project involves providing a complete robot line to a global manufacturing partner, and ABB and Absolicon have agreed that they will collaborate on the development, sales and marketing of the global robot line.

The first unit has already been delivered to a partner in China, and framework agreements have been signed with enterprises in more than a dozen countries for the acquisition of robot production lines, and ABB supplies robots for all new installations.
