The Global Water Awards recognise outstanding achievements in the water and wastewater treatment and desalination industries, with a focus on innovative technologies
ABB won the Smart Water Project of the Year award for its use of smart water management technology to improve the flexibility of Wellington Water's water supply and sewerage network and better prepare it for the future
ABB's smart water management technology combines instrumentation and digital solutions to help Wellington Water manage its infrastructure in a sustainable, cost-effective and safe way
At the Global Water Summit in Berlin, Germany, ABB's partnership with Wellington College Water New Zealand won the 2023 Global Water Awards for Smart Water Project of the Year. With the ABB solution, Wellington Water can measure and store water flow data in real time, saving up to 10% of energy per month
To significantly increase the flexibility of its drinking water infrastructure, Wellington Water worked closely with ABB to monitor water flow in real-time using ABB smart flow meters and further improving energy efficiency with ABB drives, benefiting local communities through cost savings and increased flexibility. In public facilities, water pumps account for a large proportion of energy consumption, and are also equipment with high energy consumption in the process of water circulation, ABB intelligent inverters can improve the energy efficiency of water pumps and reduce energy consumption.
At the same time, built-in calibration tools and health checks assist operators in ensuring the longevity of their equipment. Once the data is recorded, it can be easily exported for further analysis and evaluation, allowing critical factors to be identified early and remediation actions taken faster. Wellington Water provides water infrastructure management services to six local councils in New Zealand, including 105 pumping stations, 248 sewage pumping stations, 148 reservoirs and 27 stormwater pumping stations in various locations.
Amina Hamidi, Global Head of Measurement & Analytical Instrumentation Business Line, ABB, said: "This award is an 'Academy Award' for the water industry, and winning this award is a great recognition for us. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, and the Global Water Summit is one of the most important conferences for the international water industry. ABB is committed to helping the water industry deliver safe and healthy drinking water to communities around the world, and this award is a full recognition of the hard work and dedication of the ABB team in this regard. ”
Paul Winstanley of Wellington Water said: "This award recognises the successful partnership between Wellington Water and ABB. We fully understand that efficient management requires accurate measurements. That's why ABB's solutions are critical to Wellington Water and our vast network of water and sewerage. With ABB's technology, we can ensure that every drop of water is well documented.
