ASTI is a global leader in high-additivity autonomous mobile robot (AMR) malls with a broad portfolio of vehicles and software

The acquisition adds robotics and machine automation solutions to the offering of a combined automation portfolio that further expands into new areas of work

The AMR business will be headquartered in Burgos, Spain, and will be led by ASTI CEO Veronica Pascual Boé. The new Asia AMR Center, which includes a seamless value chain and manufacturing, will open at the ABB Robotics Factory in Shanghai

ABB today announced that it will acquire ASTI Mobile Robotics Group (ASTI), the world's leading manufacturer of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) with a broad portfolio of products across all major applications supported by the company's software suite. This will expand ABB's robotics and automation offerings, making it the only company to offer a seamless portfolio for the next generation of agile automation.

The acquisition, which is a key part of ABB's external addition strategy, was signed on July 19 and is expected to close in mid-summer 2021. The parties agreed not to disclose any details regarding the purchase price.

Founded in 1982 and headquartered in Burgos, Spain, ASTI employs more than 300 people in Spain, France and Germany. It is majority-owned by Veronica Pascual Boé, who also serves as CEO. Other shareholders include Keensight Capital, a European investor in the acquisition. Today, it powers one of Europe's largest fleets of AMR equipment and has a broad customer base in the car, logistics, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical sectors in 20 countries. Since 2015, the company has an annual addition rate of nearly 30% and plans to complete about $50 million in revenue in 2021.

"With its work-leading portfolio, comprehensive software suite and deep domain expertise across additive domains, ASTI was the perfect choice for us as we support our customers with next-generation agile automation," said Sami Atya, President of ABB Robotics & Technology. Discrete automation business. "With this acquisition, ABB will be the only company to offer a complete portfolio of AMR, robotics and machine automation solution automation solutions, from production to logistics to point of consumption. This is a game-changer for our customers, as they adapt to personalized customers and seize the opportunities presented by serious changes in customer needs. ”

AMRs will underpin unprecedented agility, from production, logistics, intralogistics, and implementation to retail and healthcare environments. This will complete the shared vision of ABB and ASTI to help customers replace today's linear production lines with fully responsive networks where smart AMRs can autonomously navigate materials, parts and finished products between intelligent articulation stations in factories, logistics centers, laboratories, shops or hospitals.

Veronica Pascual Boé, CEO of ASTI, noted: "ABB's vision is a perfect fit for us, as we all support our customers' agility and competitiveness by accelerating the automation of the worksite. This is the next exciting phase of our journey, and together we will accelerate our innovation initiatives, expand our global customer service, partner network, production and execution capabilities, and use ABB's global store access, especially in China." I'm excited to be part of the expanded bot handling team and lead the AMR business through this ambitious addition initiative. ”

ASTI's front-runner AMR portfolio includes autonomous tractors, goods-to-person resolution programs, unit transporters, and container handlers, as well as comprehensive software products, including vehicle navigation and control, fleet and order fulfillment, and cloud-based traceability.

These will be integrated with ABB's robotics, machine automation, modular solution plans and software suites, including RobotStudio®, ABB Robotics' simulation and programming stuff, to create a comprehensive automation portfolio for ABB's customers.

ABB and ASTI offer deep expertise in manufacturing industries such as cars, food and beverage, and consumer packaging, as well as new add-ons such as logistics, e-commerce, retail, and healthcare.

With global AMR sales estimated to reach approximately US$14 billion by 2025, with a compound annual addition rate of approximately 20%1, ABB plans to expand AMR sales and service support to 53 countries around the world.

ASTI's headquarters in Burgos, Spain, will become ABB's AMR business headquarters, led by Pascual Boé, whose central functions include development, engineering, product and project value chains, which continue to take place in ASTI's facilities. ABB will significantly expand the production capacity of its AMR business headquarters to support the planned sales expansion in Europe and the Americas. To promote the potential of AMRs to be added in China and Asia, ABB will also establish an AMR hub in Asia with a seamless value chain and manufacturing at its new robotics factory, which will open in Shanghai in 2022. China is the world's largest robotics mall, with an estimated $1.8 billion in annual AMR sales by 2025.

The acquisition comes shortly after the company announced the expansion of robotic automation for new areas and new users, including the launch of a new GoFa™ and SWIFTI™ cobot family, as well as an announcement to advance the automation of construction work.
