A $300,000 grant to Ambuj Varshney for research into more sustainable networked embedded systems (NES) and easier industrial data collection
ABB awarded the second ABB Research Award to Dr. Ambuj Varshney in recognition of Hubertus von Grünberg for his research on ultra-low-power and long-range communication systems (LoRea) for battery-free sensors that can be accessed from the surrounding environment. Varshney's research, which will receive a $300,000 grant over three years, has the potential to pave the way for widespread deployment of battery-free sustainable networked embedded systems (NES).
The 33-year-old researcher received his Ph.D. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Uppsala University, Sweden, May 2018, and was recognized at a ceremony in Dättwil, Switzerland. He beat out more than 60 applicants from leading institutions around the world.
NES applications are increasing rapidly. With the number of connected devices expected to grow to 50 billion by 2020, one of the key research challenges will be sustaining large-scale deployments. The jury said Varshney's research could support the NES in a sustainable way over the long term, without negatively impacting the physical or radio environment.
"Ambuj Varshney is a deserving recipient of this award because his innovative approach can help pave the way for autonomous industries by significantly improving our ability to collect, transmit and ultimately analyze data in an environmentally sustainable manner," said Peter Voser, Chairman and Chairman. ABB CEO at the award ceremony.

The ABB Research Awards are awarded every three years and recognize the best PhDs. The dissertation leads to outstanding research proposals in the areas of electrical, mechanical or software engineering, electronics, robotics, artificial intelligence, process automation, and any related technical disciplines, applied to utilities, industry, transport, and infrastructure.
The next edition of the ABB Research Award will be presented in 2022.
