ABB technology is driving progress in reducing carbon emissions in the United Kingdom.
This weekend, the ABB FIA Formula E International Championship returns to London for the first time since 2016. The new 2.25-kilometre, 22-lap circuit not only coils around the Royal Docks and ExCeL London Exhibition Centre, but also features an indoor section – a top-notch international cutting-edge motorsport.
Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer, ABB: "It's great to see ABB Formula E return to the United Kingdom, especially with the addition of interior elements to the track. This is only possible because the ABB Formula E Gen2 sedan is emission-free, so when it comes to racing, they highlight the benefits of cleaner and more sustainable mobility. They are a sign of how technological preemption can be a driving force in dealing with the challenges facing our planet. ”
ABB demonstrates its position as a technology leader in the United Kingdom across a wide range of industries, helping to cut carbon emissions and increase power.
David Hughes, Managing Director, ABB United Kingdom: "At ABB, we work closely with our customers to ensure they are on track with their sustainability policies, but we are also leading the way. For the seventh year in a row, we have reduced our carbon emissions and achieved the official "Carbon Reduce" certification. In 2020, we achieved a 39% reduction in our mandatory emissions as we continued to shift to more sustainable operating practices, our shift to green power, smarter building management technologies, and our industry-leading commitment to an all-electric fleet. ”
In the United Kingdom, National Grid's policy is to operate a zero-carbon power system by 2025. To help complete this policy, ABB is working with Statkraft, Europe's largest renewable power generator, to plan, manufacture and install two high-inertia-synchronized condenser systems for the Lister Drive Greener Grid project in Liverpool, north-west England. The innovative project will play a key role in stabilizing the local power grid to handle the added wind and solar energy. To ensure round-the-clock availability of this important system, Statkraft also signed a 10-year service contract with ABB.
Another groundbreaking ABB United Kingdom project in collaboration with United Kingdom Electricity Network is to add the amount of renewable power connected to the grid from medium-voltage substations. The program will end with real-time monitoring and control of distributed power (DER), such as wind and solar farms. UK Power Networks' new approach, with thousands of substations in the United Kingdom, has the potential to unlock 1.4 gigawatts (GW) of network capacity and then complete further integration of distributed power. This will save United Kingdom distribution network operators 19 million tonnes of CO2 emissions and £750 million in cost savings per year. In between, ABB's technology will help save around £350 million worth and will support the United Kingdom's journey to net zero by 2050.
ABB UK employs 1,800 people across 13 locations, manufacturing, selling and servicing across four global business lines.
ABB is the title collaborator of the ABB FIA Formula E International Championship, an international racing series of all-electric single-seaters. Its technology underpins events on city street circuits around the world. ABB entered the electric car market in 2010 and has now sold more than 400,000 electric car chargers in more than 85 markets. Over 20,000 DC fast chargers and 380,000 communication chargers, including those sold through Chargedot.
