ABB and Ericsson pave the way for digital transformation in the industry

During WEF 2020, world leaders will witness the potential of latency-free communications enabled by 5G. At the conference center in Davos, Switzerland, an ABB YuMi® cobot will engrave a message in a sandbox while a second YuMi® robot located 1.5 kilometers away will replicate it.

The simultaneous action will be realized in real time via the Switzerland Telecom 5G network equipped with Ericsson technology and will be viewed on video screens at both locations. Based on years of technical cooperation, ABB and Ericsson have developed the underlying technology needed to connect machines via 5G mobile networks.

"ABB will continue to drive the digital transformation of the industry by investing in the development of innovative solutions and products. Our partnership with Ericsson and Switzerland Telecom will help us fully realize the full potential of 5G in industrial manufacturing," said Peter Voser, CEO and Chairman of ABB. Sami Atyya, President of ABB's Robotics and Discrete Automation business, said: "5G wireless technology makes it easier for robots to connect to the cloud and factory automation systems, enabling faster access to more data and better decision-making based on insights, which will help improve efficiency and reliability throughout the production cycle. As we replace traditional wire setups with 5G mobile networks, we can significantly increase manufacturing flexibility. ”

"5G technology partnerships across enterprise, government, and society are key to growing the digital economy. Börje Ekholm, President and CEO of Ericsson, said that by embracing and enabling this partnership, new digital opportunities can be realized that benefit the global economy, national economies and businesses of all sizes.

Urs Schaeppi, CEO of Swisscom, said: "The joint demonstration using our real-time 5G network in Davos gives us a glimpse into the capabilities and possibilities of 5G in manufacturing and robotics. Now is the time to move into 5G. ”

With this technology, the company paves the way for maximum flexibility for machines on the factory floor. With 5G networks, the deployment and operation of large fleets of autonomous machines and robots will become a reality.

A significant advantage of 5G in industrial environments is that multiple machines can be controlled by a central resource instead of a single control/single-purpose method of operation, reducing the cost of managing and maintaining OT as well as IT systems on a global scale.

ABB is constantly working on its own industries across its customer base. For example, in the end of 2018, ABB implemented remote control of a ferry at the port of Helsinki, a world first. 5G is an enabling technology that will help drive the digital transformation of industries and improve the productivity, efficiency, and quality of the global manufacturing industry.
