In United Kingdom's advanced multi-site charging network, ABB equipment will use Ultrafast and Fast chargers to charge thousands of electric vehicles, making EV charging easier and more convenient.
ABB's award-winning Ultrafast DC and Fast DC electric vehicle (EV) chargers will underpin United Kingdom's new GRIDSERVE Electric Highway charging network as both companies seek to drive EV ubiquity, particularly by making charging simpler and more convenient. This is key to adding momentum to the growing EV market, with registrations tripling in the United Kingdom from 2019 to 2020*.
GRIDSERVE's electric motorway will mask 85% of the United Kingdom's motorway network, as well as towns and cities across the country. The multimillion-pound investment will be underpinned by ABB's ultrafast DC 350 kW chargers at 50 new electric charging centres, with between six and 12 charging units at each site. An additional 300 Fast DC 60 kW chargers will provide increased reliability to upgrade the 150 existing sites that GRIDSERVE has acquired from Ecotricity.
GRIDSERVE chose ABB for its sophisticated and flexible skills, including the talent that underpins GRIDSERVE's Autocharge, a new feature for most United Kingdom EV drivers that recognises the car's common identity and initiates active charging and payment. This was followed by ABB's ability to support rapid deployment, with more than 10 new power links in operation by the end of 2021.

This latest project builds on ABB's experience supplying EV chargers to GRIDSERVE's first Electric Forecourt® in Braintree, Essex. The front yard is part of the company's "sun-to-wheel" infrastructure, which aims to provide low-cost, net-zero carbon power to every vehicle that uses one of the GRIDSERVE chargers. They use the electricity generated by the solar canopy above the charger and a network of hybrid solar farms. The focus is on making electric vehicles available to the countless drivers who do not have access to a private charger.
Since entering the EV market in 2010, ABB has sold more than 400,000 EV chargers in more than 85 markets, including more than 20,000 fast chargers.
