ABB and Volvo electrify Gothenburg's city streets

Starting in 2020, 157 new Volvo electric buses will start running on the streets of Gothenburg, Möndal and Patille, powered by charging infrastructure solutions from market-leading supplier ABB. This landmark announcement represents a significant step towards achieving a sustainable public transport solution for the region's 180 million bus trips per year.

In line with the Sweden government's vision for Sweden to be climate neutral by 2050, public transport company Västtrafik expects to electrify all urban transport in West Jotaland by 2030.

Volvo Buses and ABB are helping to achieve this by supplying bus operator Transdev with 157 new electric buses and supporting charging infrastructure.

Services are scheduled to begin in December 2020, and the new electrified line will mean that 220 electric buses will transport residents and visitors to Gothenburg by the end of the year.

In the second half of 2020, 19 new high-power chargers will be installed before the new buses are put into operation, with two more stations planned for the future.

Buses in Gothenburg, Mölndal and Partille will be charged by ABB's 450kW high-power Panto Down charger. The solution is a modular solution based on OppCharge, an open interface for direct current (DC) electric bus charging, providing high-power charging via automatic roof connection. ABB will provide a complete solution through ABB's cable distribution cabinets, which include charging stations and all necessary grid connection hardware.

The bus will be charged for three to six minutes at charging stations along the route. The high-power charger is part of ABB's innovative ABB Ability™ digital solutions and services, covering all business areas, providing connectivity that provides support for network operators, enabling network operators to remotely monitor and configure charging points, minimising downtime and increasing efficiency.

With a capacity of 150 passengers, the new buses reduce CO2 emissions by 88% when converted to electricity, combining high passenger capacity with a low environmental footprint.
