ABB traction technology improves energy efficiency and reduces carbon emissions for rail operators
ABB has won more than $140 million worth of orders from Switzerland train manufacturer Stadler to supply state-of-the-art traction equipment for trains and locomotives in the United States and several European countries. These orders were booked in the second quarter of 2019.
In the United States, the order includes traction converters for 19 double-decker trains for Caltrain to meet the projected growth in travel demand in the San Francisco Bay Area. The new trains equipped with ABB equipment will help provide better service, faster connections and sustainable commuting services.
The order includes ABB's supply of high-efficiency traction transformers and traction converters for 27 regional trains of Norway's state-owned passenger transport operator Norske Tog (NT). Fourteen of the new trains are equipped with ABB's on-board energy storage system, which improves energy efficiency and makes the fleet more sustainable.
In Germany, the latest generation of roof traction converters and dry-type traction transformers will be installed on 64 new FLIRT (Fast Innovation Regional Trains) trains on the S-Bahn network in Hanover. The converters are based on ABB's patented multilevel topology and are manufactured using the latest semiconductor technology. Similar traction equipment will be installed on 12 new FLIRT trains from Switzerland operator Schweizerische Südostbahn (SOB). Trainsets powered by ABB will serve regional and long-distance routes.
Stadler's Spain subsidiary in Valencia has ordered traction converters and traction transformers for 15 locomotives in various countries, including France, Germany and Spain. In addition, traction equipment for new railway vehicles was ordered for other European operators in Italy and Slovakia.
Morten Wierod, President of ABB's Sport business, said: "Through our partnership with Stadler, we have been successfully integrating new technologies into modern trains for more than 17 years. "ABB's highly compact and lightweight traction technology makes trains more energy efficient, improves operational performance, and increases space to improve passenger comfort."
ABB has a long history of providing innovative and energy-efficient technologies to the rail sector, manufacturing and servicing all components and subsystems in urban, intercity and high-speed rail infrastructure and rolling stock networks. ABB also provides lifecycle services support, including maintenance and retrofits for its large global installation base.
