ABB has won more than $180 million worth of orders from Switzerland train manufacturer Stadler to supply cutting-edge equipment for more than 160 trains and locomotives in Europe and North America. ABB's battery and traction systems will further advance decarbonization and support the transition to more sustainable electric vehicles.

Regarding the Wales & Borders rail franchise in the United Kingdom, the order contains custom-built ABB traction equipment for 71 rail units. Traction equipment converts electrical energy from overhead power lines, generators, or batteries into the correct voltage and frequency to drive traction motors. Of these trains, 24 will be equipped with advanced skills to complete the trio of trains, powered by catenary, diesel generators or batteries.

The high-power on-board energy storage system using lithium-ion batteries is produced by ABB in Baden, Switzerland. This innovative system allows trains to run on the non-electrified part of the track without the use of diesel engines, which then reduces the carbon footprint and significantly reduces the cost and need of electrification.

To cut emissions in and around Cardiff, Wales, 36 Stadler-type CITYLINK trams will be equipped with ABB traction equipment and energy storage systems to replace the current diesel fleet. The trams will run on some of the networks using overhead lines, and together they will switch to battery form in the non-electrified sections.

In addition, traction equipment will be installed on more than 100 new regional trains and locomotives in Germany, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, Canada and the United States. Trains equipped with ABB equipment will help provide better service, faster connections and increased commuter continuity.

"With our recently inaugurated energy storage system in Baden, Switzerland, ABB has expanded its skills and market leadership in sustainable mobility. We are able to supply the entire traction chain from a single source," says Morten Wierod, President of ABB Drives. "ABB has many years of experience in energy storage systems that can be used in a variety of applications, such as power grids or solar systems. Now, in collaboration with Stadler, we have succeeded in integrating energy-efficient and state-of-the-art traction equipment with batteries in modern trains. ”

Energy storage systems are becoming an integral part of rail vehicles and play a key role in sustainable transportation. The increasing use of these skills can help decarbonize transportation and bring a variety of benefits, including improved energy efficiency, improved operational flexibility, and reduced cost and total cost of roadside infrastructure. ABB has a long history of providing innovative and energy-efficient know-how to the railway sector, manufacturing and servicing all components and subsystems in the city, intercity and high-speed networks of railway infrastructure and rolling stock. ABB also provides lifecycle services support, including maintenance and retrofitting for its vast global installed base.
