ABB's groundbreaking subsea power distribution and conversion technology system is commercially viable, with breakthrough potential for cleaner, safer and more sustainable offshore oil and gas production after completing 3,000 hours of shallow water trials.
For the first time in the world, energy companies will have access to a reliable power supply of up to 100 megawatts at distances of up to 600 kilometers and water depths of up to 3,000 meters, with enough pressure to break bricks. This can all be achieved with a single cable with little or no maintenance for up to 30 years, making oil and gas production feasible in far-flung deep-sea environments.
A $100 million joint industrial project (JIP) for research, design and development between ABB and Equinor and their partners Total and Chevron was launched in 2013. Shallow water testing in Vaasa, Finland, means that much of the world's offshore oil and gas resources can now be electrified.
"This milestone marks an outstanding achievement and the culmination point of an inspiring technology development achieved through great dedication, expertise and perseverance. This is the result of a close collaboration between more than 200 scientists and engineers from ABB, Equinor, Total and Chevron over many years of joint efforts," said Dr. Peter Terwiesch, President of ABB's Industrial Automation business.
By powering pumps and compressors on the seabed close to the reservoir, ABB's subsea power distribution and conversion technology can significantly reduce electricity consumption. The use of shore power can reduce carbon emissions and thus save a lot of energy. ABB's subsea power technology can be connected to any power source, enabling future integration with renewable energy sources, such as wind and hydropower.
Depending on the specific field development case, the new technology could save more than $500 million in CAPEX 1 if eight consumers, such as pumps or compressors, were connected to a single cable 200 kilometers away from other infrastructure via a single cable.
Reducing the number of people at sea will reduce the risk and improve overall safety. In the context of increasing digitalization and the increasing autonomy of offshore operations, the marine ecosystem is also expected to usher in new opportunities.
"Moving an entire oil and gas production facility to the bottom of the sea is no longer a dream. As we transition to a new energy future, remotely operated, increasingly autonomous subsea facilities powered by low-carbon energy sources are more likely to become a reality," said Dr. Terwiesch.
Previously, only transmission cables and subsea step-down transformers were proven to operate underwater. Today, ABB's complete subsea power distribution and conversion system includes step-down transformers, medium-voltage variable speed drives and switchgear, control and low-voltage power distribution, and power electronics and control systems. ABB's flagship distributed control system, ABB Ability™ System 800xA, controls rigorous testing.
