The new portal provides comprehensive information on ABB's achievements in navigating the Alps sustainably
More than a century ago, ABB took on the challenge of opening up more routes through the Alps. To achieve this ambitious goal, the company must combine best-in-class technical performance with the highest sustainability standards. It has done just that, creating an impressive legacy of expertise and success in the mountain railways of the Alps.
The United Nations established the International Mountain Day to raise awareness of the climate change faced by mountain regions and their inhabitants. The newly launched ABB website provides in-depth information on how the company offers sustainable routes to the Alps, the highest mountain range in Central Europe and the homes of around 14 million people.
Through a virtual tour, website visitors can get a comprehensive understanding of ABB's technology and its important contribution in making mountain tourism a green experience, sustainably crossing the highest Alpine passes and taking visitors to the so-called Jungfrau of Europe. eco-friendly approach and write history as a pioneer of Alps electric vehicles.
Once at the ski slopes, skiers can enjoy state-of-the-art Atomic skis, made by ABB robots in collaboration with human experts. In Madridsa, Switzerland, the cable car to the peak of the Schaffürggli is equipped with an automatic size recognition system and a height-adjustable conveyor belt when passengers board the cable car. This allows small children and people with disabilities to be lifted to the ideal seat height using snowboards.
On the interactive map, visitors can learn more about the Alpine regions of Switzerland, Austria and Germany, such as Stoos in Switzerland, where ABB's high-performance motors power the world's steepest ropeway railway line, enabling 1,500 people to make one trip per hour at twice the speed and twice the previous capacity. Just days after the opening of the Stoosbahn, the next record-breaking Alpine project began operations in Bavaria, Germany.
The new Zugspitze cable car has set three world records at the same time. Its only steel support is the world's tallest 127 meters. In addition, the Aerial Tramway successfully coped with the largest total height difference ever recorded at 1,950 meters, while also erecting the world's longest free cable span of 3,213 meters. ABB also supplied key electrical components for the power supply and ventilation system for the 57-kilometre-long railway, which crosses the Gotthard Mountains, one of the most important mountain passes in Europe, connecting the south and north of the continent.
The website also provides more information about ABB's contribution to the region's electric vehicle infrastructure. For example, thanks to ABB's fast-charging stations, visitors to the World Economic Forum's WEF this year were able to complete the entire route from Zurich Airport to Davos using sustainable transport methods.
