At a time when many children around the world are at particular risk due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ABB is providing 1 million Switzerland francs to support charitable causes.
As part of its efforts to promote social progress, ABB is renewing its partnership with the World Children's Fund, a global children's rights organization focused on preventive action so children can enjoy a safe childhood. It mainly targets groups most at risk of violence and sexual abuse. This includes children living on the streets, children who have been victims of violence and abuse, or who are unable to live with their parents.
ABB and the World Childhood Fund have established a long-standing and trusted partnership that began more than 20 years ago when the company became one of the organization's founding partners. Founded by HM Queen Silvia of Sweden, the foundation's mission is to defend children's rights and provide better living conditions for vulnerable and exploited children at risk around the world. The Foundation currently supports more than 75 projects in 14 countries, with a focus on prevention, intervention, and education.
"ABB's generous donation comes at a critical time when the global pandemic poses significant risks to children, especially as schools are closed. Paula Guillet de Monthoux, Secretary-General of the World Children's ··Fund (UNICEF), said: "This will not only help set up social helplines for some of the most vulnerable, but also help promote new technologies for child safety, including online protection. ”
"Especially at this time of year, it's important to help other less fortunate people. Experience over the past few months has shown that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a particularly severe negative impact on children due to increased violence and abuse. With the full support of our Board of Directors, our donation and renewed commitment to the work of the World Children's Fund represent us doing our part in helping to uphold children's rights around the world," said Björn Rosengren, CEO of ABB.
Theodor Swedjemark, ABB's Chief Communications Officer and member of the Group Executive Committee for Sustainability, added: "Promoting social progress is one of the three pillars of our ABB 2030 Sustainability Strategy, which we launched in November this year. As part of this strategy, we want to strengthen our long-term commitment to community engagement by providing impactful support for community building in education, diversity and inclusion, and community care. ”
ABB has a long history of working with the community. The company's main social engagement programs include the Jürgen Dormann Foundation, which helps financially challenged engineering students, an enterprise-level agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to support innovative water and habitat projects, and its Nobel International Partnership, which promotes knowledge and interest in science education, sustainability, and other important global issues. This year, ABB also donated 2 million Switzerland francs to the ICRC's COVID-19 project, which provides infrastructure for health centres, health infrastructure and critical items such as soap and masks. In 2019, ABB supported a total of 580 community projects in 44 countries.
