RAK Mill Indonesia signs a new contract with ABB as part of a digital transformation project to assist with its highest ever output value
As part of PT's major digital transformation project, ABB won its first order with its recently launched Sheet Break Performance. The Riau Andalan Kertas plant (RAK) in Indonesia is part of Asia Pacific Resources International Limited.
ABB is a long-term digital transformation partner of RAK, helping papermakers complete their optimization policies and improve the operational capabilities of their paper machines, ultimately moving from diagnosis to guesswork and ultimately preventive measures. The mill recently stated that it had achieved the highest annual paper output in its history.
RAK went through a lot of web breaks and was expecting a better understanding of why. ABB started with base-level control adjustments and paper machine fingerprints, and is executing the claimed operations, all of which are fed through collaborative operations to bring RAK to the next level.
The web break function is the latest complement to several other ABB functional services, including wet-end control and paper machine drive functions. The plant can produce up to 2.8 million tons of pulp and 1.15 tons of paper per year.

By automating and contextualizing multiple data points into an intuitive user interface, Sheet Break Performance enables instant diagnostics and actions. RAK will further benefit from root cause analysis within one minute of the abort occurring, and operators will be alerted when the abort is imminent, allowing corrective actions to be applied more quickly.
In addition to the Operations and Process Variability Analyzer module, the bridging service element of the system will assist the plant in completing the "golden run" by finding the planned operating time of the running machines, further promoting its approach to improving EBITA, operability and availability.
