ABB has received an additional order from IONITY for an additional 324 350 kW high-power electric vehicle (EV) chargers. As part of the second phase of its network expansion, these chargers will be available in 24 countries by the end of 2020. Financial details of the order were not disclosed.
ABB has been commissioned as a technology partner since 2018 to supply 340 high-power chargers to IONITY and is the first company to launch a 350 kW charger with liquid-cooled cable in the European market. With such a high power level, it only takes 8 minutes to achieve a charging speed of 200 km.
IONITY, a joint venture between the BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group with Audi and Porsche, has opened 202 charging stations in 18 European markets to date. IONITY recently celebrated the launch of its 200th charging station in Lully, Switzerland, which includes ABB's latest high-power custom IONITY charger.
Michael Hajesch, Managing Director of IONITY, said: "ABB is one of our preferred technology partners for high-power chargers in Europe. With the new custom designs they launch with IONITY, they are continuing to expand the market. They developed a very small footprint for the dispenser unit in our new IONITY design"
ABB's custom charger for IONITY is ABB's slimmest design to date and fits IONITY's design needs perfectly. The new charger also benefits from other improved design features, including quieter operation, a customised display and a longer cable with integrated cable management retraction that makes it easier to reach the charging ports on all models and ensures that the cable is always kept away from the ground, so it doesn't get dirty for the user.
Frank Muehlon, Global Business Leader, E-Mobility Infrastructure Solutions, ABB: "Our partnership with IONITY represents two like-minded organizations coming together to create a greener, more sustainable future for all. IONITY IS A GREAT PARTNER BECAUSE DUE TO THE SCALE OF THE ROLLOUT, DEDICATED SOLUTIONS CAN BE DEVELOPED TOGETHER. ”
"We are proud to support IONITY in the initial phase of the rollout of their EV charging network and look forward to our continued collaboration with them to build a comprehensive, pan-European, high-power charging network. IONITY's goal is to make long-distance European travel for electric and fossil fuel vehicles viable, and with the latest extension of our supply agreement, we are one step closer to achieving this mission," Muehlon added.
Plug-in vehicle sales in Europe reached 408,000 units in 2018, up 33%* year-on-year*, and Europe is expected to quickly overtake United States to become the second-largest EV market in the 2020s, driven by tighter fuel economy regulations and growing commitments from domestic automakers**.
In its 130-year history, ABB has been synonymous with breakthroughs in e-mobility and has become a global leader in connected DC fast charging systems for electric vehicles. ABB currently sells more than 13,000 DC fast chargers in more than 80 countries around the world. ABB recently received the 2019 Global Electric Vehicle Leader Award for its role in supporting the international adoption of sustainable mobility solutions.
