The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to the ExCeL exhibition centre in London
Technological developments in EV charging and powertrain electrification support the drive for a more sustainable future
The latest video from ABB's FIA Girls on Track series
Following the latest round of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in New York City, the series crossed the Atlantic back to the ExCeL exhibition centre in London.
With changes in ground and elevation, as well as changes in lighting, riders will be in London for another challenging weekend of racing. Once again, the ExCeL circuit will see the field shift from indoor to outdoor on the 22-turn, 2.141-kilometer track, which has been slightly modified for Season 8 with new corners at turns 10 to 13.
Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer at ABB, said: "In a city where air pollution is a priority, sustainable mobility is a key part of the solution. Showcasing the technology and potential of electric vehicles in London is a great way to change the way people think about electric vehicles and drive adoption of electric vehicles – and ABB is proud to support this and help create a more sustainable future. ”
The transport of people, goods and raw materials currently accounts for 30% of global CO2 emissions and is the focus of global change.
David Hughes, Managing Director, ABB United Kingdom, said: "ABB is helping companies accelerate decarbonisation by providing complete electric powertrain solutions for a range of industrial vehicles, transport and vessels. Electric motors can reach 95% efficiency, while diesel engines can only achieve 45% efficiency in the optimal load range, so this technological development from powertrain electrification to the implementation of an effective and comprehensive charging infrastructure is crucial. ”
The number of public EV charging stations in the United Kingdom has increased dramatically over the past few years – an average annual increase of 44% since 20151. ABB is working with customers to help facilitate this necessary growth. Currently, the company has around 1,500 chargers in operation in the United Kingdom and is constantly working to improve access.
ABB's Ultrafast DC and Fast DC EV chargers will support the new GRIDSERVE Electric Highway charging network in the United Kingdom. This is because both companies are looking to drive the adoption of electric vehicles, particularly by making charging easier and more accessible. GRIDSERVE's Electric Highway will cover 85% of the United Kingdom's motorway network, as well as towns and cities across the country.
The consequent increase in energy demand has focused attention on renewables and grid stability – another area where ABB technology is providing sustainable solutions in the United Kingdom. One example is the £25 million Green Grid Park, which is currently in the final stages of construction and will increase green energy use across Liverpool. ABB provided technical, operational and long-term maintenance services to Statkraft, Europe's largest renewable energy producer, in the project.
E-Prix London will also host the FIA Girls on Track, of which ABB is a global partner. The FIA Girls On Track offers girls between the ages of 8 and 18 the opportunity to explore the many facets of the motorsport industry through a series of events and workshops. One of them will focus on ABB Robotics and feature GoFa collaborative robots.
Prior to E-Prix in London, ABB released a new video in its series as part of the company's partnership with FIA Girls on Track. Featuring Formula E Chief of Staff Hannah Brown, the video explores her thoughts on the increase in women's engineering roles in the sport and the importance of closing the belief gap she believes young girls may still exist.
Following London, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will debut the final two rounds of Season 8 in Seoul, Korea, from August 13 to 14.
