In the latest episode of the ABB Decoded podcast, Adrian Guggisberg, President of ABB Motion Services, discusses the need to conserve energy to achieve carbon neutrality goals
Guggisberg shares how applying digital solutions can significantly improve the energy efficiency of installed electric motors
The podcast explores some of ABB's innovations that are helping the industry save more energy
Electric motors are ubiquitous, powering heavy industrial machinery and everyday household appliances. Nearly half of the world's electricity is used to power electric motors, many of which are inefficient. In the latest episode of the ABB Decoded podcast, Adrian Guggisberg, President of ABB Motion Services, discusses how significant energy savings can be achieved by applying digital technologies to an installed base.
Guggisberg highlighted the benefits of using renewable energy to combat climate change, but also noted that as more and more internal combustion engines switch to electric, the energy supply will not be enough to meet demand. Guggisberg explains that industry must conserve energy and use it efficiently.
More than 300 million electric motors are installed worldwide. The energy savings from applying the latest technologies will eliminate the need for about one-third of the world's coal-fired power plants.
Digital solutions that drive better decision-making
This podcast explores how the industry can benefit from data and expertise by inserting sensors into motors and then connecting them digitally. "If we can do this at a very low cost and in a very simple way, we will be able to scale up the solution and really start to apply the solution to many motors," Guggisberg explains.
With digital solutions, the industry can increase transparency. "When a person wants to change something, it starts with transparency. Digitalization allows us to achieve greater transparency. It helps us make better decisions and reduce the need for a physical presence, which increases the speed at which we do things," Guggisberg added.
He also explained how transparency in energy consumption in certain applications can help the industry improve energy efficiency.
Meet future expectations
Guggisberg also addresses the company's need for partnerships to achieve future goals. To address the global climate challenge, industries have set ambitious sustainability and carbon neutrality targets. A key part of ABB's 2030 sustainability strategy is to support customers and suppliers to reduce emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality in ABB's own operations.
Previously, companies had only one goal in mind when adopting digital solutions and could operate at a lower cost. Today, he explained, the industry has multiple goals, including reducing costs, reducing carbon emissions, and reducing waste in a circular way, and achieving a balance of these goals will require partnerships.
"The next step in the partnership is actually to change some of the business models as well. We are moving towards an outcome-based business model, and as a provider of solutions, we can even guarantee results," he said.
Energy efficiency innovations
Several of ABB's technologies are already helping companies realize the potential of energy efficiency. Guggisberg shares an example of ABB's recently launched ABB AbilityTM digital powertrain energy assessment.
"It's basically using the same data that we use for asset health management, but it's based on data, and if we upgrade to the latest version, we can gain insight into the potential energy-saving technologies of the application or solution," Gugsberg explained.
During the pilot phase, the solution helped the customer identify 10 applications with the greatest potential for energy savings by upgrading to the latest technology. These upgrades will enable customers to save on energy costs and reduce emissions. The return on investment of such a solution will be realized within one to two years.
