ABB acquires Codian Robotics BV, a leading supplier of delta robots, primarily for high-precision pick-and-place applications. Codian Robotics' products include hygienic design lines that are ideal for hygienic sensitive industries such as food, beverage, and pharmaceuticals. With this deal, ABB is accelerating its involvement in the growing delta robotics space.
Codian Robotics is based in Ede, Netherlands, and has 20 employees worldwide. The company will continue to serve customers directly. The acquisition was signed and completed on October 1, 2020, and the parties agreed not to disclose any details regarding the purchase price.
Sami Atyya, President of ABB Robotics & Discrete Automation, said: "Our acquisition underscores our focus on breakthrough technologies that help our customers realize the full potential of automation and increase their agility in a rapidly changing business environment. "Codian Robotics' technology and industry expertise is the perfect complement to our suite of food and beverage, pharmaceutical, service robotics and logistics solutions, while also supporting ABB's machine-centric robotics offerings."
"Over the years, we have developed an extensive product portfolio. ABB's impressive global reach and industry expertise will help us deliver our portfolio globally. I look forward to working together to write a new chapter in our success story," said Freek Hartman, founder of Codian Robotics.
While most robots in the food and beverage industry today are not designed to come into contact with food, Codian Robotics' portfolio includes a hygienic design that enables safe, open food processing.
"There is a great need for pick-and-place robots that can ensure high hygiene standards, and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend. Our food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and logistics customers are particularly interested in the potential of automation to enable the supply chain to continue to function while protecting employee welfare," Atiya added.
In the future, ABB will be able to provide customers with a wider range of delta robotics and integrated solutions from a single source, contributing to ABB's machine-centric robotics strategy, integrating machine automation and robot control into a single platform.
Hans Wimmer, President of ABB's Machine Automation division and Managing Director of B&R, said: "With Codian Robotics, we are acquiring one of the world's most successful suppliers of delta robotics, which has an extraordinary track record in the machine building sector. In the future, we will be able to provide fully integrated solutions to customers worldwide and across all industries. ”
