With sustainable mobility solutions becoming a key component of ABB's Electrified Smart City Mission Zero, the Digital Technology Pioneer has launched the latest expansion of its electric vehicle portfolio
For years, industry analysts have considered 2020 to be the tipping point for electric vehicle (EV) adoption, predicting that the global EV market share will climb to at least 3%* in 2020 and accelerate to more than 50% by 2040**.
ABB, a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions, has taken another important step in driving this e-mobility revolution over the next decade with the launch of the new TerraAC wall box.
Not only is Wallbox designed to meet the growing demand for high-quality and affordable connected charging in homes and businesses, but it also supports the growing number of renewable energy users who want to harness and manage their own electricity consumption.
The new TerraAC wallbox is available in up to 22kW variants to ensure compatibility with the electrical systems of homes and buildings around the world. It provides a safe, smart and sustainable charging solution that supports ABB's electrified smart city mission of zero emissions, a realistic vision of zero emissions for all.
It will be available in select markets, including Europe, in the coming months, and globally in May 2020. AC wall boxes can be ordered through the ABB partner network.
Frank Muehlon, Global Business Leader of E-Mobility Infrastructure Solutions at ABB, explains: "The convergence of urbanisation, digitalization and industrialization requires a major shift in the way we travel. We were already leading the DC fast charging market, so we recognized the need to leverage our extensive experience to develop game-changing AC solutions for overnight or extended charging in homes and businesses.
"The TerraAC wallbox represents exactly that; Easy to install and use, it will integrate seamlessly with the digital lifestyles of today's consumers, enabling them to effectively manage energy use and contribute to a greener society for today and future generations. ”
TerraAC wallboxes benefit from connectivity, with configuration and software updates available via a dedicated app or remotely via the cloud, providing great flexibility and minimizing the need for on-site intervention and maximizing uptime and efficiency.
At the same time, each charger is equipped with a high-precision revenue-level energy meter, which can be integrated with the intelligent building energy management system to achieve advanced load management functions. This enables home and business owners to adjust the power of their assets as needed to maximize charging power and cost efficiency.
Other benefits of the TerraAC wallbox include:
High-value quality
Wide range of connectivity options, including Wifi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet
The space-saving design fits seamlessly on a wall or pedestal and holds two chargers back-to-back
The TerraAC wallbox offers multiple connectors and is compatible with most electric vehicles
Dust and water resistant in harsh weather conditions for extended uptime and product life
Future-proof flexibility
Prepare for the future by updating simple software with user applications
Simplifying authentication via RFID or applications provides flexibility for public use case applications
Seamless integration with ABB's complementary building automation solutions
Security & Protection
Evaluated and tested by an independent third party to the highest standards
The current-limiting protection allows for maximum charging power without false tripping
Integrated ground fault and overvoltage protection protects both the user and the vehicle
ABB is a global leader in electric vehicle infrastructure, providing a full range of charging and electrification solutions for electric vehicles, electric and hybrid buses, as well as marine and rail. ABB entered the EV charging market back in 2010 and today sells more than 13,000 ABB DC fast chargers in more than 80 countries. ABB recently received the 2019 Global Electric Vehicle Leadership Award for its role in supporting the international adoption of sustainable mobility solutions.
Since January 2018, ABB has been the title partner of the ABBFIA Formula E Championship, the world's only global all-electric racing series. The tournament showcases cutting-edge developments in a competitive environment that help drive advancements in electric vehicle technology.
