Signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate possible future strategic cooperation and new business opportunities
ABB and SKF have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the possibility of cooperation in the automation of manufacturing processes. The MoU was signed by ABB CEO Björn Rosengren and SKF CEO Rickard Gustafson at the ABB Robotics Experience Center in Västerås, Sweden.
After the successful delivery of several projects across SKF's global manufacturing network, including in Gothenburg, where ABB's fleet of industrial robots is installed in the bearing manufacturer's state-of-the-art plant, the two companies are now taking the next one to join their collaboration.
Through the partnership, ABB and SKF will identify and evaluate solutions to increase manufacturing capabilities and support customers in increasing production efficiency. As a first step, SKF's investment in automation and clean manufacturing processes will serve as a test bed, focusing on reducing CO2 emissions from SKF's operations. In the long term, both companies intend to explore new business opportunities in both traditional and new market segments, and both companies will bring experience in a wide range of industries.

"The need for automation is increasing due to a shrinking working-age population, rising labor costs, and the industry's efforts to create resource-efficient operations as it transitions to more sustainable manufacturing. That's why I'm pleased to announce the deepening of our collaboration with SKF to further strengthen our technology leadership," said Björn Rosengren, CEO of ABB.
"We are increasing the degree of automation at our production facilities in all regions to maintain a competitive edge and improve our environmental performance. This also makes the work environment more flexible and safer. ABB is an important partner for us in this area and, as two leading industrial companies, we will continue to develop innovative solutions to further enhance the competitiveness of our customers," said Rickard Gustafson, President and CEO of SKF.
Recently, the two companies signed a contract to deliver specific projects in the field of advanced manufacturing automation, random sorting by robots or the installation of innovative logistics automation solutions on more complex industrial floors within the SKF manufacturing spectrum, making it possible to see how robots can achieve quality assurance for detail management.
