The initial contract with Netherlands luxury yacht manufacturer Oceanco for the Azipod® skills installation project paves the way for broader collaboration in the field of sustainable electric propulsion, which is expected to surpass $10 billion by 2025
ABB's broad scope of projects is planned for superyachts built to the highest sustainability specifications and includes the supply of two 2.5 MW Azipod® units as well as propulsion drives and control units.
Known for superior fuel power and maneuverability over conventional setups, the Azipod® system is suitable for a wide range of vessel types, from cruise ships to tankers and ferries. The scalability of the Azipod® pusher means that it is equally well suited to the environmentally conscious superyacht profession, where the owner also pays special attention to the highest comfort specifications due to low noise and vibration.
The Azipod® skill is based on a steerable propulsion system, and its electric drive is included in an underwater pod on the exterior of the hull, which rotates 360 degrees. Introduced three years ago, the Azipod® propulsion system has become a professional benchmark for eco-friendly vessel skills, with a proven ability to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20% compared to traditional shafting propulsion systems.
The scope of the ABB Continuing Superyacht project included the supply of two 2.5 MW Azipod® units, as well as propulsion drives and control equipment
Remco Jurgens, Naval Architect at Oceanco, said: "Oceanco's ultimate approach is zero environmental impact, and we are delighted to be working with ABB Marine & Ports, whose preemptive skills are known for delivering the sustainability benefits that superyacht owners are increasingly seeking. He added that the two companies are evaluating the potential for integrating a complete power and propulsion system in future projects.
"We are delighted to have reached our first deal with Oceanco and look forward to future collaborations. Our two companies share the spirit of moving on, which is a solid foundation for our connection," said Thomas Hackman, Development Manager for Superyacht Mall at ABB Marine & Ports.
Both companies have recently highlighted their commitment to sustainable and ambitious approaches that will also contribute to the decarbonization of the ocean segment. As part of its 2030 Sustainability Strategy, launched in November 2020, ABB will achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations and will support its customers in reducing their annual CO2 emissions by at least 100 trillion tons, equivalent to the annual emissions of 30 million internal combustion engine cars. At the same time, the superyacht builder launched the Oceanco NXT initiative, working with collaborators in different areas of business, with the ultimate goal of planning and building zero-emission superyachts.
"We see ABB as a leading supplier and an important partner for future developments," says Jurgens. "An efficient energy management system, energy storage and an advanced propulsion system are considered to be the basis for the realization of our policy."
Another advantage for Oceanco and its customers is ABB's global support network, which provides round-the-clock advice and the ability to monitor and troubleshoot equipment using the ABB Ability™ long-distance diagnostic system. Today, with more than 1,000 vessels worldwide connected to ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operations, digital services are at the heart of shore support vessels. ABB experts monitor in-vehicle systems, coordinate equipment diagnostics and provide 24/7 protection services through eight ABB Ability™ Collaborative Operations Centers around the world.
ABB provides the world's leading skills for the marine profession and drives the development of sustainable shipping. ABB's electric propulsion, data-driven decision support and ship-to-shore induction solutions are paving the way for a zero-emission vessel industry, providing shipowners with higher power and reliability and preparing vessels for the future.
