ABB is proud to announce that it will be charging the Gen3 sedan for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship – the first all-electric global event series.
ABB has been the title partner of the tournament since Season 4. The Gen3 sedan will start racing in Season 9 (2022-2023), with vehicles planned to be lighter, faster, and more fuel-efficient.
The agreement was formalized today at a virtual event between ABB Electrification President Tarak Mehta· Daniela Lužanin, Head of Partner Contact, ABB Formula E; Alejandro Agag, founder and chairman of Formula E· and Jamie Reigle, ·CEO of Formula E.
ABB's electrification team, together with motorsport governing body FIA and Formula E engineers, is currently working on specifications and requirements to develop an innovative and safe solution for charging Gen3 cars with a portable charging unit that can charge two cars at the same time.
With more than 14,000 DC fast chargers installed in more than 80 countries around the world, ABB has a wealth of proven skills and experience that will be incorporated into these Gen3 chargers and tailored to meet the specific needs of the racing environment.
"The ABB FIA Formula E Championship is more than just a race – it's a testbed for our innovative electric car skills, advancing the electric car production line and ultimately creating a cleaner environment for all," said Meta. "We are very proud to be associated with Formula E and the FIA's decision to elevate the Race Series to World Championship status in Season 7 reinforces Formula E's growing influence."
"Since ABB joined in Season 4 as a champion partner of the FIA Formula E Championship, they have been working closely with us to develop the series as a testing ground for the development of race-to-road skills, helping us accelerate the adoption of electric cars in the fight against climate change. We're looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together after our long partnership relationship," says Aaga.
"With Formula E building on the first successful phase of our relationship with ABB's partners, we are excited to expand our connection with a deeper Gen3 integration. ABB will provide key charging skills to improve racing products and demonstrate the potential to enhance the charging capabilities of electric cars," said Reigle.
ABB has become a global leader in connected DC fast charging systems for electric cars and has been provided with high-power DC fast charging stations for high-impact projects such as Electrify America, IONITY, Fastned and others. It is also the official partner of TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team.
The ABB FIA Formula E Championship, which continues to grow in global reach, showcases this key innovation skill set for the success of sustainable motorsport, which will take place on August 5 at Berlin's Tempelhof Airport, with six races.
