The announcement is part of a global strategic partnership signed by the two companies in 2019, which establishes a shared vision and collaboration to enable automation systems and wireless communication for the flexible production of the future as part of Industry 4.0 and digitalization.
Under the agreement signed in Thailand, Ericsson will be ABB's "preferred connectivity partner" in the country. The agreement provides a framework and opportunity for ABB and Ericsson to work together to accelerate the digital transformation of different enterprises across Thailand and strengthen support for ABB customers through 5G connectivity expertise.
Focus areas include ABB's Robotics & Discrete Automation, Industrial Automation and Motion Control business areas, as well as ABB AbilityTM platform services. For example, the collaboration will cover 5G-enabled augmented reality lenses for remote commissioning in manufacturing environments, as well as global NB-IoT motors and drives connected through Ericsson's communication service provider partners and their IoT accelerator platforms.
"ABB and Ericsson have been collaborating on research projects in Europe for a long time to study the role and benefits of 5G in flexible automation and production. With the support of 5G, the deployment and operation of a large number of autonomous machines and robots is becoming a reality. Our partnership in Thailand means we will work together to accelerate the full potential of 5G in industrial manufacturing, opening the door to new digital opportunities to support Thailand's adoption of Industry 4.0," said Gianandrea Bruzzone, Country Managing Director, ABB Thailand.
Since the delivery of the first electric motor to Siam Cement in 1913, ABB has been committed to the development of Thailand's utilities and industrial sectors. ASEA and the BBC were founded in Thailand in 1978 and 1982 respectively, and in 1988 the two companies merged to form ABB. "For four decades, ABB Thailand has been working with individuals, authorities and organizations in the utilities and industrial sectors, as well as in the construction, transport and infrastructure sectors to support the growth of Thailand's economy," said Bruzzone.
Nadine Allen, Head of Ericsson Thailand, said: "Our partnership with ABB will enable us to leverage the benefits of 5G connectivity for businesses in industries such as manufacturing, airports, ports, oil and gas, and mining. 5G networks will be as important to industrial companies as 4G is to smartphone users. For many, the immediate value of 5G is not primarily in terms of high speed and low latency. Instead, requirements such as reliability, real-time location, security, and privacy are paramount. ”
Ericsson has been present in Thailand for 114 years and has supported Thailand through the movement of generations. "We are proud and honored to support Thailand on its journey towards Industry 4.0. Given our experience deploying 5G on 61 live networks; We are well positioned to transform and digitize the local manufacturing industry. Allen added.
In January 2020, ABB and Ericsson collaborated at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to demonstrate for the first time how 5G's real-time communication capabilities can be used to easily and effectively control robots from long distances.
