The fifth round of the sixth season of the ABB Formula E Championship takes place on the streets of Marrakech
ABB technology supports Morocco's goals of renewable energy and energy reduction
The ABB FIA Formula E Championship travels to magical Marrakech this weekend for the fifth round of Season 6. After an action-packed race at Mexico, Panasonic Jaguar Racing's Mitch · Evans won in dominant style to take the lead in the Drivers' Championship, with the all-electric single-seater series now heading to North Africa for the fourth time, thrilling fans in Marrakech.
The 24 drivers will compete for first place at the international car Mulle Hassan circuit – a 12-lap, 2.99-kilometer track located in the city's Agdal district, in the shadow of the red city walls. Named after the Crown Prince of Morocco, the circuit consists partly of a permanent track and partly of the roads around the hotel area. This combination offers diverse challenges for teams and riders.
ABB entered Morocco in 1980 and is now a key supplier of electrification, robotics, motion control, industrial automation and electrical networks. ABB works closely with Morocco to support its sustainability strategy, which aims to reduce energy consumption by 15% by 2030 and increase the share of renewable energy. In 2009, 1.7% of its electricity came from renewable sources. By 2015, this had risen to 34% and is expected to reach 52% by 2030.
Pierre Leretz, Managing Director of ABB Morocco, said: "Morocco's ambitious climate protection goals align perfectly with ABB's goals, which are creating huge visibility for electric vehicles as the title partner of Formula E's flagship race series. Just over two years ago, ABB and Formula E began their journey in Marrakech – the first race for ABB as a championship partner. ”
Electric vehicles are a key area for ABB, and in Morocco, the company supplies electric chargers to automakers Tesla and Jaguar. ABB is also the official charging partner of the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY, supporting the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.
ABB supports the country's Sustainable Development Goals through several projects. ABB partnered with Energie Eolienne du Maroc, one of Morocco's leaders in the energy sector, to build Morocco's first hybrid substation. Located within a wind farm owned by a Morocco company in Narva, south of Morocco, it is connected to the country's national grid and is designed to withstand challenging weather conditions in desert and marine air conditions.
In 2010, ABB supplied and installed a set of low- and medium-voltage drives, motors and transformers for a new plate mill line for Maghreb Steel, the country's only flat steel producer, for its first large-scale metal industry project in Morocco. This results in energy savings of up to 25% for the entire line and a lower environmental impact.
ABB Morocco is headquartered in Casablanca, in addition to having a turbocharger service station in Agadir, equipped with the most modern machinery and specialized tools, offering a wide range of products and services to shipping companies and shipbuilders.
