ABB has been selected by United States shipbuilding company Vigor Fab LLC as the newest addition to the Washington State Ferries fleet as a supplier of hybrid electric propulsion and energy storage systems to set up zero-emission operations for the largest ferry system in the United States.
The new "Olympic-class" ferries can carry 144 cars and 1,500 passengers each, heralding a new era of technological shift for Washington state transportation operators toward technologies that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel use.
Upon delivery in 2024, the first vessel in the series will be the first new vessel in the Washington State Ferry fleet to feature hybrid electric propulsion and high-capacity energy storage systems. The new vessel will be able to run entirely on battery power and be able to revert to hybrid mode if needed.
"This landmark project supports Washington State's 2050 goal to reduce emissions by 57.5% from 2019 levels with hybrid and electric propulsion solutions that are space-efficient, easy-to-install and operationally flexible," said Vice President Jay Hebert. President - Marine Manufacturing, Vitality. "Driven by Washington Governor Jay · Inslee, the state legislature and the Washington State Ferry Company's commitment to replace aging ferries with clean technology in line with the state's commitment to environmental stewardship, Vigor is pleased to partner with ABB on this extraordinary work."
Leveraging ABB's Onboard DC Grid™ power distribution system and proven drive technology, the new ferry design will optimize energy use, whether utilizing host power, battery power or a combination of both. Battery power can also extend zero-emission capabilities throughout the supply chain through the use of renewable energy and hydropower.
"Moving towards a zero-emission future relies on technologies that meet today's environmental and cost needs and provide flexibility for integrating tomorrow's energy in the coming years," said Juha Koskela, Managing Director, Marine & Ports, ABB. "ABB is delighted to support this milestone project, which demonstrates the ways in which power, digital and connected solutions can achieve a zero-emission future for shipping."
Washington State Ferry is the largest ferry system in the United States By 2040, Washington Ferry Systems plans to replace 13 existing diesel ferries with hybrid newbuildings and convert the other six ferries to plug-in hybrid ferries and install charging capacity terminals on many ferries. All hybrid vessels will be able to recharge at the terminal, and some of them will be able to operate in all-electric mode on shorter routes. With newly built clean energy ferries joining the fleet, fuel consumption is expected to be 9.5 million gallons in 2040, compared to 19 million gallons in 2018, and CO2 emissions are expected to fall below the 2050 reduction target by 2034.
According to the trade association Interferry, ferries carry 2.1 billion passengers and 250 million cars worldwide each year. As the volume increases, the industry is under pressure to meet the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) target of reducing annual emissions by 30% by 2025.
