The latest sustainability milestone for the Global Production Center marks the delivery of zero production waste to landfill in just two years

The standards set at the Frosinone plant reinforce ABB's commitment to conserving resources, with the company reducing overall waste by 27% from 2013 to 2020

ABB Smart Power's manufacturing unit in Frosinone, Italy, has achieved zero production from landfill – 14 years ahead of the EU circular economy package target of no more than 10% landfill by 2035.

Driven by rapid urbanization and population growth, the annual amount of waste generated globally is expected to jump from 2 billion tonnes in 2016 to 3.4 billion tonnes over the next 30 years. About 37% of this global waste is disposed of in landfills1. Landfills have long been the default way to remove garbage worldwide and are considered unsustainable. Space is running out, and landfills contribute to climate change through high concentrations of methane and carbon dioxide produced by decaying garbage that could otherwise be reused.

ABB's Frosinone plant opened in 1969 and is ABB's center of excellence for the development and manufacture of low-voltage circuit breakers. The 150,000-square-meter facility with 800 employees is highly automated and produces more than 3 million circuit breakers per year. Frosinone is a lighthouse factory selected by the Italy government as a model of digital transformation and Industry 4.0 strategy, dedicated to driving smart, digital and connected operations and improving efficiency along the entire value chain. Achieving zero production waste to landfill is a plant-wide initiative.

Building on the 27% reduction in total waste volume achieved between 2013 and 2020, ABB is steadily reducing its environmental footprint through waste reduction and recycling programs at its global facilities. "Protecting resources is a key pillar of ABB's Sustainability 2030 strategy, and wherever local conditions allow, zero waste to landfill is a clear goal," said Theodor Swedjemark, ABB's Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer. "The zero-production waste benchmark achieved at ABB's Frosinone site is a testament to the fast, tangible progress of this strategy and more circular operations, moving beyond the unsustainable 'take, make, dispose' production model."

Giampiero Frisio, President of the Smart Power Division, said: "We have proven at the Frosinone plant that zero waste to landfill is achievable with the right attitude and commitment from everyone in the business. Since announcing our zero waste goal in 2017, this latest milestone marks how we are leading positive change across the entire production chain to deliver more sustainable solutions for all stakeholders. ”

Employee training is essential to educate, empower, and build the right attitudes and culture for the Landfill Zero Production Program. Training topics include the importance of managing waste and waste segregation in accordance with current environmental legislation. By involving the team, the handler is more involved in the proper management of the waste area.

Set up waste sorting and identification at the waste generation site. Each workstation has around 150 different labelled containers for production waste and separate containers for cardboard and plastic waste. The same amount of waste is coded as before, but the higher the separation, the higher the waste recovery rate.

ABB Smart Power's manufacturing arm in Frosinone is exploring more sustainable practices, such as reducing CO2 emissions by optimizing processes throughout the supply chain, circular manufacturing processes, reducing transportation and increasing plastic recycling.
