ABB and Metsä Fibre, part of the Metsä Group, have now signed a binding start-up agreement under which ABB Finland will supply Metsä Fibre's bioproduct mill in Kemi, northern Finland with electrification and drive skills solutions.
The agreement is contingent on a final funding decision from the Metsä Group, which will be made as early as autumn 2020. The order is valued at around 40 million euros. Production of the new plant will begin in 2023. It has a production capacity of 1.5 million tons of pulp per year, as well as many other biological products.
"We are very pleased that our expertise and products will be part of the funding for this programme, which, if realized, would be the largest funding ever made by the forestry industry in Finland." Our assignment to this project will help to ensure high plant availability as well as reliable and efficient production and efficient use of power. ABB Finland has more than 30 years of experience in electrification and turnkey projects for demanding pulp and paper occupations in Finland and around the world," says Pekka Tiitinen, Managing Director of ABB Finland.
"ABB stands for what we expect from our partners: a commitment to safety, on-time delivery and quality delivery. A high degree of localization is also essential. We are moving towards a common approach to making fossil-free bioproducts in Kemi, the most efficient wood processing plant in the sector. We have all the prerequisites for the successful implementation of major projects together with competent partners," says Ismo Nousiainen, CEO of Metsä Fibre.
Under the initial agreement, more than 1,000 electric motors from the proposed Kemi bioproducts plant will be produced at ABB's Vaasa and Helsinki plants in Finland. Protective relays and safety switches will be supplied from ABB's Vaasa plant, and more than 600 drives will be supplied from the world's largest drive factory in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki. In addition, ABB Power Grids Finland served as the transformer handover for the Kemi project. The plant's main transformers will be manufactured at ABB's grid transformer plant in Vaasa.
The plant will leverage ABB's latest and most robust energy-efficient electrification and operational skills. The mill's motors will be controlled by ABB's latest intelligent motor control system. To save power, ABB's new drive will operate half the power of the plant's electric motors. The plant concept uses ABB's latest generation of high-efficiency motors as the specification. The plant's electrical systems and drive skills will be integrated into ABB's Ability™ condition monitoring and remote support system.
