Leading portfolio of integrated automation, electrification, and digitalization to deliver more sustainable performance
Helping energy-intensive industries improve productivity and efficiency and achieve a low-carbon society
ABB's Process Automation business area will today host a Capital Markets Day in Helsinki, Finland. The business area is highlighting how it can improve long-term profitability by enabling industrial customers to manage the energy transition to a more sustainable future. This will be achieved by integrating its leading automation systems, industry-specific anchor products, sensing devices, and sophisticated digital solutions.
One of the biggest challenges facing industry today is to shift around 30% of its energy from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy sources by 20501, while meeting the growing demand for a wide range of products that meet consumer demand. Process automation supports industries that meet a wide range of basic needs – from supplying energy, water, and basic materials, to manufacturing goods and transporting them to market. Its customers include the hydrocarbon industry, chemicals, mining, metals and minerals, cement, pulp and paper, power generation, and ships and ports, among others. These sectors are taking significant steps to improve energy and resource efficiency while reducing harmful emissions.
With its strong digital business organic strategy, process automation has generated approximately $500 million in orders from industrial software and digital services today and expects the segment to continue to achieve double-digit growth. Digital products are centered around the value pillar, realizing the greatest value creation potential for customers through advanced analytics and artificial intelligence. This suite of solutions helps customers in a wide range of industries predict maintenance, optimize energy, improve cybersecurity, and improve operational efficiency.
"At this very moment, we are at the heart of some of the most important shifts in society," said Peter Terwiesch, President of the Process Automation business area. "We can make a real difference with our portfolio of products and systems, all of which are in line with ABB's goal to transform the industry through leading-edge technologies to meet the world's energy challenges. In addition to becoming more sustainable, our technology helps our customers continuously improve productivity and run safer operations, which is important because they operate some of the most important and complex infrastructure on the planet. ”
ABB's automation system products are at the heart of such operations, which harmonize production processes and optimize energy management. According to an independent report2, its distributed control system (DCS) has been ranked number one in this field for 22 consecutive years. In 2021, ABB maintained a leading market share of approximately 20% in a market valued at more than $14 billion and built the largest DCS installation base and services business in the industry. Serving customers throughout the entire lifecycle of the system, often decades, keeping assets up to date with the latest technology, and a close relationship with customer operations enables ABB to continuously improve production efficiency.
In addition to a comprehensive product portfolio, the business area demonstrated its financial position and how it was able to increase profitability to double digits across all divisions by exiting non-core businesses, strengthening project selectivity and strengthening execution. The business area is now aiming for further improvements through pricing, top-up acquisitions and continued rigorous cost management.
ABB is currently planning to exit its turbocharging division, now known as Accelleron, which is part of this business area. Without this division, the business area would have achieved $5.5 billion in revenue, an operating margin of 11.1% through 2021, a net working capital of less than zero, a return on capital employed (ROCE) of approximately 20%, and approximately 20,000 employees across four divisions worldwide.
