Mitsubishi Outlander, a crossover SUV produced by Mitsubishi Car Corporation, is available in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, equipped with a large-screen HUD (head-up display) developed by Panasonic Car Corporation in the Rican market from April this year. This is the first time that Mitsubishi has used a Panasonic WS HUD, and it is also the first time that a WS (windshield) type HUD has been used.
The HUD is a system that projects vehicle speed, navigation commands, and MI-PILOT ASSIST driver assistance information onto the windshield to display various information within the driver's line of sight. Because the display is projected near the center of the driver's field of vision, the burden on the driver is reduced by reducing eye movements, and the circulation interaction between the driver and the system is enhanced.
With the optical know-how acquired through the development of digital cameras, Panasonic has applied high-precision freeform mirrors and high-strength PGU (Image Generation Unit) skills to the HUD to successfully deliver large, bright, and clear screen distortion (field of view: 7 degrees × 3 degrees).

(1) High-precision freeform mirror
Panasonic's HUD utilizes high-precision freeform mirrors, and the company applies lens design and molding skills originally developed for digital cameras. This minimizes the number of HUD units, which, together allow low-distortion images to be projected on a large screen in the vehicle's limited space.
(2) High-strength PGU
Panasonic's proprietary HUD backlight design was developed based on LCD's lighting skills to provide the driver with a clear image even in conditions where it may be difficult to see the display, such as in direct sunlight or when wearing sunglasses.
