Panasonic Corporation announced that it will use its well-established gas meter equipment skills in Japan to supply gas utility services in Europe starting in the fall of 2021, and the adoption rate of smart gas meters in Europe is growing.
With the increasing demand for natural gas across the globe, the smart gas meter market is expected to grow significantly in terms of the benefits of reducing environmental impact through stable supply and improved power generation. In Europe in particular, EU member states have been pushing for the deployment of smart gas meters in line with the European directives issued following the introduction of the "20-20-20 target (three 20s)" in 2008.
Smart gas meters need to have both low-power features and high reliability, allowing them to run for long periods of time on battery-only capabilities. As a result, in recent years, the spread of energy-efficient communication networks, including the Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT*) using base stations operated by telecommunications operators, has accelerated. Natural gas companies can benefit from the opportunity to improve transaction power based on the use of smart meters and to provide new services through the useful use of measurement data. On the other hand, there are some problems with running transactions based on smart meters, such as due to the increased complexity and workload of the workforce, including the processing of contracts with multiple telecom operators to mask each meter.
To address these issues, Panasonic will launch gas utility services as a one-stop solution that includes NB-IoT connection services, data monitoring and analysis and use of collected data, and smart gas metering devices. The company plans to launch these services in Italy starting in the fall of 2021 and expand them throughout Europe.
The company has been contributing to the safety and security of gas infrastructure – with a preference for the country, by perfecting its sensor skills for detecting earthquakes and gas leaks, as well as its safety skills, including valve mechanisms that shut down gas. In addition, the company is one of the first Japanese manufacturers to participate in demonstration trials of smart meters introduced by local gas companies in France and Italy by using Japan's proven gas meter equipment skills. In addition, in response to the needs and trends of the European market, we have been expanding our gas meter equipment business, and after entering the gas meter equipment business in Italy in 2014, we began to use smart gas meters.
In the next few years, Panasonic will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases through efforts to develop gas meter equipment with a focus on safety skills, as well as to develop and supply common services that make useful use of its advantages.
