The concept of smart cities is not new, and replacing human deliveries with robots is one of the common concepts. Japan's "Fujisawa Sustainable Smart City" recently began testing the new Panasonic delivery robot.
Fujisawa Sustainable Smart City, located in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, is an urban development plan for Fujisawa City that lasted for six years. Different smart city applications will be tested in this particular area. Panasonic's autonomous delivery robot was launched earlier, and the autonomous walking system was tested at the end of last year. From February this year, a delivery service will be provided to local residents. Panasonic said that the test wanted to see how well people were accepting of this new delivery experience.
The robot can walk and avoid obstacles autonomously, but still needs to be controlled remotely. The speed is only 4 km/h when necessary, which is quite safe. Panasonic pointed out that under the epidemic, the demand for contactless delivery services has increased, but the industry is short of manpower, and hopes that robotics can improve the situation. In Japan, in addition to Panasonic, there are many similar studies. For example, Japan Post has also begun testing autonomous walking delivery robots in public places.
