Panasonic Corporation today announced its plans to showcase the "RE100 Solution", which provides 100% of the electricity consumed by commercial activities from renewable sources by using an in-house power generation system that combines a pure hydrogen fuel cell generator and a photovoltaic generator. It is the world's first attempt to manufacture a "RE100 plant" through the full use of hydrogen.
The idea that the three perspectives of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) are essential for sustainable corporate growth is spreading around the world. In this context, more and more companies are joining the RE100 (100% Renewable Energy) program to ensure that 100% of the electricity consumed in business activities comes from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and hydro, and biomass.
There are two main ways to procure renewable electricity, i.e., internal generation and external procurement. There are also various external procurement options, including direct contracts with business operators who own power supply systems using renewable energy and the use of energy attribute certificates. Companies will choose from these options to ensure a 100% renewable energy generation ratio. However, there are many types of energy attribute certificates, the availability and price of which depend on market conditions. As a means to solve these problems, Panasonic has proposed a solution that combines pure hydrogen fuel cell generators, photovoltaic generators, and storage batteries. To demonstrate the solution, Panasonic will build a large-scale facility at its Kusatsu site in Shiga Prefecture that is equipped with an in-house power generation system that combines a pure hydrogen fuel cell generator (500 kW) and a photovoltaic generator (about 570 kW), as well as a lithium-ion storage battery (about 1.1 MWh) to store surplus electricity.
