Dürr AG has developed the KUKA robot cell for human-robot collaboration with KUKA's sensitive LBR iiwa lightweight robot for automated bonding in the final assembly of the passenger car industry. Not only does it help to improve the quality of workpieces such as roofs, antenna bases, and fuel tanks in the body, but it also saves time and reduces the cost per part.

In the automatic fuel tank bonding process of car assembly, skilled workers use a manipulator to guide the fuel tank to the turntable, and directly transfer it to the robot for further processing. LBR iiwa applies a highly uniform adhesive seam to the fuel tank and uses a sensor on the head to monitor whether the adhesive seam height is matched. When the agile light robot finishes its work, a skilled worker loads the fuel tank into a designated position in the body.

The LBR iiwa is able to identify any faults that present when loaded into the roof antenna base

When gluing the roof antenna base, the worker manually places the workpiece into the robot's gripper, which pulls the workpiece and guides it to the adhesive nozzle position using the tower. The LBR iiwa slowly moves the roof antenna base from below to the viscose nozzle. This is where the bonding process begins, where the beads are meticulously modified via nozzles as the robot travels along the track. The worker then removes the roof antenna base at the starting point and attaches it to the vehicle.
