With the rapid development of industrial technology, on-site equipment is also developing towards a high degree of integration and automation. But no matter how the technology develops, behind the dazzling technology, the basic common equipment is always a solid backing. Hydraulic press is one of the old industrial basic equipment, which appears in almost all walks of life. Understanding the conventional mechanical risks of hydraulic presses, and consciously avoiding them from the design stage, can effectively prevent the occurrence of safety accidents.

Generally speaking, there are 9 potential safety hazards in hydraulic presses:

Direct contact between personnel and the slider. Hydraulic presses are generally manually loaded and unloaded, so the frequency of personnel intervention is quite high.

Personnel are kept in the blind zone of the work area.

The gravity of the slider slides down. The slider slides due to its own gravity, which poses a risk to personnel.

The hydraulic system is overpressurized, causing the slider to slide. The hydraulic system has its own threshold limit, and if its set value is exceeded, it will cause the system to crash, causing the slider to slide

Oil leaks from the hydraulic system, causing the slider to slide. Due to the meshing of hydraulic system components, the hydraulic oil leaks, which causes the slider to slide.

When the equipment is repaired, the personnel are in direct contact with the slider. During equipment maintenance, personnel need to stand under the slide to work, if the slider slides at this time, it will cause fatal injuries to personnel.

Whipping risk of tubing. The unexpected risk of a tubing burst.

The connection between the slider and the mold is loose.

Basic protective measures commonly used in hydraulic presses

  1. Direct contact between personnel and the slider

Usually, a set of vertical gratings is installed on the front of the equipment operation position to prevent personnel from directly touching the slider, and the rest of the perimeter will be equipped with different protective measures according to different needs, which is generally fixed protection.

  2. Personnel are locked in blind spots in the work area

Considering that the front vertical grating needs to meet a certain safety distance, there must be a certain space between it and the slide. Therefore, it is generally used to install one group of horizontal gratings, so as to avoid personnel being in the blind spot of grating detection when loading and unloading parts.

  3. The slider's gravity slides

At present, most hydraulic presses will have an additional locking device to prevent the slide from falling.

  4. The hydraulic system is overpressurized, causing the slider to slide

Two overpressure detection valves are installed and their thresholds are set as the final protection parameters of the hydraulic system. Once triggered, the slide is prevented from slipping as with the emergency stop effect, using the hydraulic system's self-locking function and an additional locking device.

  5. Oil leakage from the hydraulic system, causing the slider to slide

An additional locking device is used to prevent the slider from slipping.

  6. When the equipment is repaired, the personnel are in direct contact with the slider

Usually the equipment will be equipped with 2 maintenance guide posts, when the equipment is in the maintenance state, the guide post will be placed under the slide to form a physical barrier. At the same time, the triggering of the safety interlock function and the application of an additional locking device can effectively prevent the slider from slipping.

  7. Hose whiplash risk/Unexpected risk of tubing bursting

Generally, we will install explosion-proof chains on the main oil pipe to prevent it from causing injury to surrounding personnel due to bursting.

  8. The connection between the slider and the mold is loose

Usually there is a physical connection between the mold and the slide, such as a bolt. Of course, there will also be a way to use hydraulic clamps for connection. In this case, the position monitoring of the hydraulic clamp needs to be considered.

  9. Risks of the rest of the special design applications

Some devices will have a second-floor platform or roller shutter application, and the position monitoring of the roller shutter door and the associated risks of falling from the platform need to be considered.
