From May 4th to May 10th, Pilz will be showcasing how future-oriented automation technologies can improve safety and productivity in the packaging industry under the theme "Flexible automation solutions for industrial safety and security" at Interpack 2023 in Düsseldorf. The focus of the Pilz booth was on sensor technology, control technology and operating and monitoring solutions for primary, secondary and end-of-line packaging, as well as industrial security: the portfolio of consulting and services tailored to the packaging industry with the Industrial Security Bridge Firewall.

Secondary packaging: Simply solves the problem of safe cartoning

One of Pilz's intelligent automation concepts is the safe cardboard feeding in the field of secondary packaging, which not only makes the packaging line safer, but also easier to operate. The TÜV SÜD-certified solution is designed for small and medium-sized machines and offers two safety controllers as evaluation units to choose from – the small controller PNOZmulti 2 for applications configured via a software tool, and the modular safety relay myPNOZ for infeed solutions for batch size 1. Pilz safety experts will explain how this flexible, cost-effective safety solution saves time and money during planning, project configuration and commissioning.

Security includes access management

Industry 4.0 has made its way into the packaging industry. Smart networking and customization are the guiding themes of the smart factory. This requires state-of-the-art automation and safety concepts, including industrial safety and information security, which also guarantee product safety. With this in mind, Pilz will be presenting Identification and Access Management (I.A.M.) Solutions for comprehensive access management in packaging machines and machine pools.

Digital solutions for plant maintenance

As a comprehensive solution for secure access management, I.A.M. also enables the selection of safe operating modes: In Düsseldorf, Pilz will be presenting an efficient digital "key-in-pocket" maintenance system, which is based on the access rights system PITreader and Pilz control technology. It prevents unintentional machine restarts when there are still people performing maintenance work in the hazardous area. Before entering the plant, one or more authorized operators authenticate with their personal transponder and are assigned a personal safety ID, which is stored centrally in the safety controller. This prevents the machine from being tampered with and prevents the operator from accidentally restarting it.

Unlike maintenance assurance systems, which use mechanical keys, operators can enter or exit the plant through any safety gate. As a result, the "key-in-pocket" offers greater flexibility and saves time during maintenance.

A firewall that protects the packaging process

The use of IT and OT (operational technology) networks means that packaging machines require additional protection. At the trade fair, Pilz will also be showcasing the Industrial Security Bridge Firewall, which protects the control network from tampering caused by unauthorized access. It monitors the data flow between the PC and the controller and reports any unauthorized changes made to the control items. As a result, it protects downstream controllers from network-based attacks and unauthorized access. This guarantees a high level of product safety, which is a special requirement in pharmaceutical and food packaging.

Machinery Directive and more

In order to obtain a safe and legal machine, machine builders must understand the relevant standards and apply them. This includes the requirements of the internationally applicable standard for interlocking devices, EN ISO 14119. Visitors to the Pilz booth can learn about the standards that other manufacturers and users need to consider. Safety automation experts provide customized support throughout the entire life cycle of a packaging machine, from risk assessment to safety validation, including international compliance assessments.

Peel magnetic relays – the characteristics and working principle of relays Peel magnetic relays – the characteristics and working principle of relays

When the input quantity (such as voltage, current, temperature, etc.) reaches the specified value, the electrical appliances that make the output circuit to be controlled on or off can be divided into two categories: electrical quantity (such as current, voltage, frequency, power, etc.) relays and non-electric (such as temperature, pressure, speed, etc.) relays.

The working principle and characteristics of Pilz safety relays The working principle and characteristics of Pilz safety relays

Pilz safety relays generally consist of an iron core, a coil, an armature, a contact reed, etc. As long as a certain voltage is added to both ends of the coil, a certain current will flow through the coil, resulting in an electromagnetic effect. Under the action of electromagnetic attraction, the armature overcomes the pulling force of the return spring and sucks in the iron ...

Peel Magnetic Relays – Difference Between Voltage Relays and Current Relays Peel Magnetic Relays – Difference Between Voltage Relays and Current Relays

1. The difference between the structure of current relay and voltage relay The main thing is that the coils are different. The coil of the current relay is connected in series with the load to reflect the load current, so its coil turns are small and the wire is thick, so that the voltage drop when passing through the current is very small, and it will not affect the load circuit.
