ABB's automation, electrification and digitalization solutions will be used in carbon capture projects in Norway
Projects that help accelerate industrial decarbonization and CO2 removal by providing transportation and permanent storage of CO2 in reservoirs 2,600 meters below the seabed
The plan is to store more than 5 million tonnes of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to taking 1 million cars off the road
ABB has been contracted by engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor Aker Solutions, a leader in sustainable energy solutions, to supply major electrical, automation and safety systems for the Northern Lights project in Norway.
A joint venture between Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, Northern Lights is the first industrial carbon capture and storage project to develop an open and flexible infrastructure to safely store CO2 from various industries in Europe. The first phase of the project, scheduled for completion in mid-2024, will have the capacity to permanently store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 per annum, with the second phase targeting to expand to more than 5 million tonnes per annum.
ABB's automation, electrical and digital solutions will be integrated into the Northern Lights project to enable remote operation of the new carbon capture terminal and ensure that the facility is operating at optimal efficiency.
Operators will gain a better understanding of the operation of the Northern Lights Terminal with its market-leading distributed control system, ABB Ability™ System 800xA, which analyzes real-time and historical data and displays plant metrics and KPIs instantly. As a result, operators will be able to make more accurate and informed decisions and review options to optimize asset and process performance.
"ABB is both a market leader in distributed control systems and a long-term partner with a thorough understanding of our business and expertise in onshore and offshore and subsea projects," said Kristin Glenna, Project Manager at Aker Northern Lights Solutions. "This is key to our decision-making process. We need to entrust our remote operations to a partner with a proven track record of reliability and optimization in order to lay a solid foundation for this important development. ”
"If the world is to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and needs 1.7 billion tonnes of CO2 capture capacity by 2030, the ability to capture and store industrial CO2 emissions that cannot currently be prevented is critical. 1," said Per Erik Holsten, Head of Energy Industries at ABB Nordics. "The Northern Lights are an important development, not only because of its contribution to rebalancing the carbon cycle, but also because of its commitment to innovation. We are excited to be a part of this exciting project that will contribute to a safer, smarter and more sustainable future." ”
The purpose-built vessel will transport CO2 captured and liquefied from the discharger to the Northern Lights Øygarden terminal in western Norway, which will be remotely operated by Equinor's facilities at Sture terminal, about 7km away. To enable remote operation, ABB will build a state-of-the-art extended operator workstation at the Northern Lights Terminal, which will work in tandem with Sture's central control room, with the two communicating seamlessly to minimize response times and support 24/7 remote operations.
In addition to the shore-to-shore solution, ABB technology will power the entire project, implementing the main electrical system through its power process management system, combined with high and low voltage switchboards and transformers.
