UOP Ecofining™ technology converts a new type of microalgae oil into sustainable aviation fuel and completed its first flight in Japan

DES PRANS, Ill., Nov. 17, 2021, United States -- Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) today announced that UOP Ecofining™ technology enables the world premiere of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from algal oil on a commercial jet.
Honeywell's Ecofining™ process uses microalgae as a feedstock to make renewable aviation fuel. Recently, two commercial flights in Japan completed test flights using fuel blends loaded with this renewable jet fuel, setting a precedent for commercial jet engines to comply with the new United States Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D7566 Annex 7 standard. Commercial flights are Japan Airlines' Airbus A350-900 and Japan All Nippon Airways' Boeing 787-8.
Japan-based IHI and Honeywell UOP have successfully partnered to produce sustainable aviation fuel using new algal oil as a feedstock and using the UOP Ecofining™ process. The UOP Ecofining™ process is the world's first technology for the commercial production of SAF, and Honeywell successfully applied the process to the commercial production of SAF back in 2016.
Manufactured at the UOP facility in McCook, Illinois, United States, this algae-based SAF undergoes a series of rigorous testing and regulatory approval from the United States Society for Testing and Materials to meet the requirements of Annex 7 of the agency's jet fuel standard D7566 for aviation fuel.
United States Society for Testing and Materials D7566 Annex 7 compliant fuels have the same material properties as existing aviation fuel (kerosene) and can be blended with existing fuels without any modifications to existing infrastructure or aircraft materials such as engines or fuel supply facilities. As a universally applicable fuel, it can be used in a wide range of commercial aircraft operations around the world.

The UOP Ecofining™ process is currently the only commercially proven process in the world that produces 100% SAF. The process produces Honeywell Green Aviation Fuel ™ that can be perfectly blended with petroleum-based aviation fuel on a large scale for commercial use. Honeywell Green Aviation Fuel ™ can be blended 1:1 with petroleum-based aviation fuel without any technical changes to the aircraft and meets all key flight specifications.

Jointly developed by Honeywell and Eni SpA, the UOP Ecofining™ process converts inedible natural oils, fats and other waste feedstocks into Honeywell Green Diesel ™ and Honeywell Green Jet Fuel ™. Both are chemically identical to comparable petroleum-based products, perform better than commercial petroleum-based diesel and jet fuels, and can be blended with petroleum-based jet fuels in a ratio of up to 9:1 for a drop-in replacement of conventional fuels without any modifications to the equipment.
Today, EcofiningTM technology is used in most renewable diesel production units with 100% bio-based feedstocks, as well as in all authorized renewable aviation fuel production worldwide. Currently, Honeywell UOP has authorized 24 EcofiningTM process units in 11 countries and regions around the world to process 12 different types of renewable feedstocks.
IHI Corporation is a Tokyo, Japan-based heavy machinery manufacturer that manufactures jet engines for aircraft, rocket propulsion systems, and builds liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants and power plants.
As early as 2011, Honeywell's sustainable aviation fuel technology was applied in China. On October 28 of that year, Air China, PetroChina, Boeing and Honeywell UOP successfully carried out China's first aviation sustainable biofuel verification flight at Beijing Capital International Airport. Air China used an existing Boeing 747-400 aircraft loaded with aviation biofuel, which was jointly produced by PetroChina and Honeywell UOP, to carry out a successful demonstration flight at Beijing Capital International Airport, marking the beginning of the development of aviation biofuel for China's civil aviation.
