DES PRANS, Ill., United States, March 8, 2022 – Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) today announced an innovative solution for applying Honeywell's UOP commercially proven Ecofining™ process technology to renewable naphtha production in the petrochemical industry. This new solution enables the production of naphtha from sustainable raw materials such as food waste oil and animal fats at a high conversion rate.
Naphtha is a valuable petrochemical raw material that can be widely used in the production of plastics; The olefins produced can be used to make other chemicals; and the production of aromatic hydrocarbons for the production of polyester products and other packaging materials. Traditionally separated from crude oil and natural gas condensate, the Ecofining™ process technology now produces renewable naphtha from renewable feedstocks. The production of naphtha from renewable feedstocks, such as food waste oil, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 80 percent (depending on the feedstock) compared to the use of petroleum feedstocks.
Prior to being introduced into the renewable naphtha solution, Honeywell's UOP Ecofining™ process technology was primarily used to produce Honeywell Green Diesel and Honeywell Green Aviation Fuel, with a small amount of bio-naphtha as a by-product. The Ecofining™ process technology is also suitable for mass production of renewable naphtha as a main product, demonstrating the design versatility and flexibility of the Ecofining™ process.

The UOP Ecofining™ renewable naphtha production process can be combined with renewable hydrogen supply and CO2 capture and storage technologies in Honeywell's hydrogen solutions to expand decarbonization pathways. For example, an Ecofining™ unit that processes 10,000 barrels per day of sustainable oil feedstocks (e.g. food waste oil), combined with renewable hydrogen and CO2 capture technologies, could reduce carbon emissions by more than 1 million tonnes per year compared to petroleum-based naphtha production.
Jointly developed by Honeywell UOP and Eni SpA, the Ecofining™ process converts non-edible vegetable oils and animal fats into Honeywell Green Diesel, which outperforms biodiesel and petroleum-based diesel. The Ecofining™ process produces diesel with a cetane number of 80, which is much higher than the 40 to 60 cetane diesel commonly used in today's diesel engines, and this high cetane diesel allows for better engine performance, can also be blended with cheaper, low cetane diesel, and meets transportation fuel standards. This renewable naphtha process route is the culmination of more than 20 years of combined operational experience with Honeywell's UOP Ecofining™ technology.
Ecofining™ technology is used in most renewable feedstock diesel production units with 100% bio-based feedstock, as well as in all authorized dedicated renewable aviation fuel production worldwide. Currently, Honeywell UOP has authorized 25 Ecofining™ process units in 11 countries and regions around the world to process 12 different types of renewable feedstocks.
