(SZSE: 002221) today jointly announced that they will build a 1 million tonnes per annum sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility in Maoming, Guangdong Province, to help meet the growing demand for sustainable fuels in the aviation industry, drive carbon emissions reduction in the aviation industry through innovative technologies, and contribute to China's "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality" goals.
The Donghua Energy Sustainable Aviation Fuel Industrial Base project will build two production units using food waste oil and animal fat as raw materials. The project is planned to be built in two phases and will be one of the world's largest production sites for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) based on food waste oil and animal fat. The use of food waste oil and animal fats as feedstock can reduce life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions by about 80% compared to conventional fuels, and the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 2.4 million tons per year after completion. 1

Donghua Energy will introduce Honeywell UOP's Ecofining™ process technology into the project, which is the first technology to be used in a major producer of commercial aviation SAF, helping to pioneer SAF production. The Ecofining™ process uses waste oil, fat and grease conversion to produce Honeywell Green Jet Fuel™, which can be blended with petroleum-based jet fuel at scale 1:1 for commercial use without any technical changes to the aircraft and meets all key flight specifications.

Ecofining™ technology is used in most 100% bio-based renewable feedstock diesel production units and in all authorized dedicated renewable aviation fuel production worldwide. Currently, Honeywell UOP has authorized 25 Ecofining™ process units in 11 countries and regions around the world to process 12 different types of renewable feedstocks. In 2021, Ecofining's™ technology enabled the world's first flight of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from algal oil on a commercial jet.
In January 2022, the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Transport jointly issued the "14th Five-Year Plan for Civil Aviation Development", which clearly proposes to improve the eco-friendly green development system, to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, and pay more attention to the strategic supporting role of scientific and technological innovation. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) also pointed out in the 14th Five-Year Plan for the Green Development of Civil Aviation that it is necessary to vigorously promote the decarbonization of the industry, strengthen the application of advanced and applicable technologies, and promote breakthroughs in the commercial application of sustainable aviation fuel.
As early as 2011, Honeywell's sustainable aviation fuel technology was applied in China. On October 28 of that year, Air China, PetroChina, Boeing and Honeywell UOP successfully carried out China's first aviation sustainable biofuel verification flight at Beijing Capital International Airport. Air China used an existing Boeing 747-400 aircraft loaded with aviation biofuel, which was jointly produced by PetroChina and Honeywell UOP, to carry out a successful demonstration flight at Beijing Capital International Airport, marking the beginning of the development of aviation biofuel for China's civil aviation.
