On November 6, Honeywell officially released the "Future Fuels - Honeywell Hydrogen Energy Industry and Application White Paper" (hereinafter referred to as the "White Paper") at the 5th China International Import Expo.

As a renewable, clean and efficient secondary energy source, hydrogen energy plays an important role in helping to achieve the "dual carbon" goal. As an important research achievement focusing on the hydrogen energy industry, the white paper details the development status, trends and goals of China's hydrogen energy industry in the context of the current energy structure transformation, and puts forward a three-step development initiative for hydrogen energy in the future, including "large-scale production", "reducing storage and transportation costs" and "accelerating the application of incentives", focusing on the development of the hydrogen energy industry chain, so as to help Chinese partners achieve energy transition, promote the development of hydrogen energy industry, and explore new opportunities for future fuel applications.

The hydrogen energy industry chain includes three key areas: hydrogen production, hydrogen as an energy source, and hydrogen as a raw material or fuel.

Key technologies in the hydrogen production process

According to the source of hydrogen production and the carbon emissions in the production process, hydrogen can generally be divided into gray hydrogen, blue hydrogen, and green hydrogen.

In blue hydrogen production technology, Honeywell has invented a blue hydrogen production process for coal-to-hydrogen and natural gas-to-hydrogen, which combines PSA and liquid CO separation technology to increase the total recovery of hydrogen and reduce the operating costs of CO and boosting. For example, Honeywell provides advanced technology and services for Sinochem's Sunon Chemical's clean coal hydrogen to hydrogen and carbon capture and utilization demonstration projects, and jointly promotes the development and commercialization of clean coal hydrogen and CO capture and economic comprehensive utilization technologies.

In green hydrogen production technology, Honeywell is leveraging its strengths in membrane manufacturing and catalyst production to develop highly efficient proton membranes, anion membranes, catalysts, and membrane electrodes.

Application technology of hydrogen as an energy source

As a clean energy, hydrogen fuel cells are an important way to efficiently utilize hydrogen energy in the field of transportation. In the field of industrial combustion, the use of hydrogen to replace some fossil fuels in the combustion process is an effective means to reduce carbon emissions. In the field of power generation, natural gas blended with hydrogen combustion is an important way to reduce carbon emissions.

Application technology of hydrogen as a feedstock or fuel

Hydrogen is not only a clean energy source, but also a very important industrial raw material. Hydrogen consumption in the industrial sector is 10% for oil refining, 19% for methanol, 37% for ammonia production, 15% for direct combustion, and 19% for other sectors*

Refiners can achieve hydrogen self-sufficiency if they transition to fully petrochemical production and bring in light alkanes such as ethane and propane.

Coal-to-methanol is the main way of methanol production in China, and green hydrogen can be introduced into coal-gasified syngas to adjust the hydrogen/carbon ratio, which greatly reduces CO emissions in the coal-to-methanol process.

Coal-to-ammonia synthesis is a more low-carbon synthetic technology route in China, which is a more low-carbon synthetic technology route to replace coal-to-hydrogen with green hydrogen.

In addition, in the steel smelting industry, hydrogen can replace C0 as a reducing agent for iron oxide, and hydrogen ironmaking (steel) will greatly reduce the carbon emissions of the steel industry.
