More than nine out of ten respondents believe that remote management and predictive maintenance are key to streamlining operations and improving property management

SHANGHAI, China, Oct. 21, 2021 – Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) recently released a study showing that more than nine in ten (94%) healthcare facility property managers believe remote management is an important means of improving operational efficiency. While only a quarter (25%) of respondents have already deployed such systems, 26% said they plan to invest in the next 12 to 18 months.

As the fourth in Honeywell's 2021 Building Trends Survey series, the report, "Rethinking Healthcare Facilities from an Integrated Entity Perspective," highlights the challenges, priorities, and personal perspectives of property managers surveyed. These respondents came from the healthcare industry in the United States, China, Germany and Saudi Arabia.

The safety and health of occupants was also a top priority for respondents, with more than 90% of respondents saying that improving indoor air quality and life safety systems is essential to attract and retain occupants. Respondents are likely to invest in at least one of the following projects in the next 12 to 18 months: indoor air quality solutions (28%), fire detection software (28%), or aspirating smoke detection technology (25%).

In addition, the pandemic has also made property managers aware that predictive maintenance is an important efficiency enabler, with 61% of respondents saying they are more willing to invest now than they were before the pandemic. Only 30 percent of respondents currently have such systems in place, but another 30 percent said they are likely to invest in technology in the near future, and 27 percent are considering a real-time tracking system for procurement personnel and assets to enhance operational efficiency. The three most beneficial measures were predictive maintenance (30%), reduced downtime (29%) and improved indoor air quality (28%).

The survey results also reveal budget-related concerns. Three-quarters of respondents said they were struggling to secure enough funding to meet operational needs – a long-term challenge for many healthcare organizations, exacerbated by the pandemic's loss of revenue for profitable projects such as non-emergency surgeries. An almost equal number of respondents (74%) expressed concern about the growing demand for beds. Despite the challenges, 31% of property managers surveyed firmly cited improving patient satisfaction as one of their top priorities in the near future, while 29% cited improving energy efficiency as a priority.

Building operational challenges brought on by the pandemic have made healthcare facility property managers realize the importance of connected healthcare facilities to improve operational efficiency and productivity. Nearly 64% of respondents said they are more willing to invest in connected healthcare facilities now than they were before the pandemic. When asked what they value most about the role of connected healthcare facilities, the majority (56%) of respondents cited improving employee productivity and building operations in healthcare buildings, and 52% citing the ability to leverage standardized data and insights from a unified platform to manage all healthcare building systems.

"Connected health facilities have a proven track record of improving patient care, clinical outcomes, and operational efficiency." Ye Li, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Intelligent Building Technologies Group China, said, "Continuously improving operational insights can help optimize the efficiency of healthcare assets to eliminate bottlenecks, reduce wait times, and improve the patient experience. These goals can be achieved to a large extent by simply upgrading the existing healthcare building management system, without having to dismantle and replace equipment. This is critical because most healthcare building property managers want to improve day-to-day output and efficiency with little or no increase in budget. ”

Connected healthcare facilities can centrally monitor, synchronize, and manage multiple processes to optimize workflows and improve operational effectiveness. At the same time, the facility can also leverage an integrated technology platform to generate revenue and reduce costs. The integration of multiple technology domains has given healthcare facilities the tools to dramatically improve the patient experience and staff satisfaction through innovations such as patient self-service portals and clinician mobile apps.
